I just didn’t like “Dunkirk” and “Lady Bird” that much. “Dunkirk” was too impersonal (oddly, “Darkest Hour” told the Dunkirk story in a better way) and “Lady Bird” was overrated. While “The Florida Project” was too controversial, too dark and edgy, too indie, it’s a really good film. And not Oscar fodder. I have no idea why “Mudbound” didn’t get nominated for best film or best director. It deserved it above “Lady Bird” and “Phantom Thread.”

Women and people of color have so little opportunity, so I do feel compelled to support them. BUT only if the work deserves it (like “Mudbound”). I resent Academy members being called out for being racist. We do not choose the films that are made. Why should we be blamed for the lack of diversity? That said, I am glad it has pushed the Academy to reach out to a more diverse group to become members.

(And if you really want to talk about diversity and inclusivity, let’s start with this ridiculous $300-million Academy museum. Think of all the great educational and other resources that could be made available to women and people of color with a fraction of that money. It makes me sick!)

“Lady Bird” over “Mudbound”? Really. I thought “Mudbound” was extremely well directed. Powerful, disturbing, and timely story. I just didn’t enjoy “Dunkirk” and “Lady Bird” as much. “Phantom Thread” I found particularly boring and pretentious. And while “Lady Bird” is a charming coming-of-age film, it is overrated and I am rather surprised at the accolades it has received.

I was underwhelmed by Plummer. I actually think Kevin Spacey might have made a better Getty. He’s so creepy it would have worked in his favor.

“Blade Runner 2049” sucked. It was a big disappointment. Clichéd. Not nearly as unique and witty as the original.

I'm going to ignore the rest of this -- I'm sure some people will have lots to say about it -- but the "Blade Runner" observation is just odd. The original "Blade Runner" is easily my favorite sci-fi movie, with a good argument to be my favorite movie period, but it's not..."witty." It was never intended to be "witty." It was thought-provoking, it was atmospheric, it was moving...but it wasn't what any reasonable person would refer to as "witty." Was the voter under the impression that this was some subtle satire? And, if so, satire of what, exactly?

Brawl in cell block 99 should have been nominated for something. Such a good movie.

I didn’t care for Lady Bird at all. I agree that Mudbound should’ve been nominated over it.

Saying that Blade Runner 2049 sucked? Well, that’s s different story.

While I don't agree that it was Oscar-worthy, it was in my personal top 5 favorites for the year. Such a great action movie. Zahler's form of violence is so original.

He's not necessarily wrong with this comment.

It really wasn't as good as I'd hoped.

Meh. It was disappointing, but those were big shoes to fill. Lots to like about the film and a handful of things it got horribly wrong. It happens.

Tbh that's exactly what I thought when I saw the trailer, so I'll forgive the horrible take on Blade Runner 2049

I've seen some similar statements about Dunkirk from other voters. All of them said they didn't understand the narrative. To say that Darkest Hour told that story better shows how stuck in the past they are. They just don't get Nolan.

Like you Blade Runner is one of my favorite films for the reasons you posted, because of this I thought about going to see this in a theater (something I rarely do anymore) then, I saw the trailer and all I could think was "WTF...They filmed this too warm, it's not supposed to be bright and sunny with reds and browns it's supposed to dark and cold with blues and garish contrasting colors." Still not sure if I will watch.

Totally fair critique.

One of the most common complaints from people when they don't like a movie..."I never got to know or felt like I cared about what happened to any of the characters."
