Oscar Isaac, Andrew Garfield And Mia Goth in for Del Toro's Frankenstein

EXCLUSIVE: Following his big Animated Feature Oscar win on Sunday for Pinocchio, Guillermo del Toro is getting closer to finding his next live-action film. Sources tell Deadline that Andrew Garfield, Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth are in early talks to star in del Toro’s Frankenstein at Netflix. Del Toro will write and direct the pic.
Insiders close to the pic caution that del Toro is still working on the script and no formal offers have given to any actors. But sources add that he has has met with all three and each is on board to star.
Del Toro has been developing the Frankenstein project for some time and has always wanted to make a movie centered on the iconic Mary Shelley story. It is unknown whether his version would be a period pic or set in modern times. It is also unknown who would be playing Doctor Frankenstein or his creation; it is believed Goth would be playing Doctor Frankenstein’s love interest.

Not that this doesn't constitute a fine cast, but why keep remaking these stories?
Why must they be remade over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over?

Kinda the status as a classic of literature.
People like new spins on familiar things. It’s why there are tons of different burger restaurants.
People like burgers and they like to see different spins on burgers. If you have a story that speaks to the human experience well enough people are going to cling to that and want to not only put their own spin on it, but see other people’s spin on it.

I get what you're saying, but at least he's not technically "remaking" anything. He's putting his own spin on a classic novel. I'd rather see that kind of project by a great director than the garbage Hollywood keeps cranking out.

Honestly, a true adaptation of the original book. The 1818 version, Frankenstein, Or a Modern Prometheus would be lit as frick.
All of the films leave so much of the story out and is framed completely differently than the novel.

How loyal was the Kenneth branagh version to the novel?

It has been awhile since I saw it, but I think it tried to stay true to the novel in ways the other films didn't.
For example, Victor confronts the monster in the cave and the monster demands a bride so that he won't be alone forever...but then the movie kinda goes off the rails and turns into an incoherent mess. Plus the script was fricking awful.
I can't remember if the movie begins with Victor traveling on an expedition to the North Pole telling his story to Walton, but every other Frankenstein movie leaves this part out, and it's kind of important.

Haven't read the novel but can't imagine Shelley would have had Robert Deniro in mind as the creation.

There was a television miniseries that came out some years back that followed the novel more closely than any other version I’ve seen. It’s been the only film I know of to physically portray the creature as he is described in the novel.

When was the last time a good Frankenstein spin (that wasn't in onstage theater) was made for a US movie?
I mean, Penny Dreadful had a nice spin on Frankenstein but that's maybe the last property I can think of in recent memory.
These kinds of properties I don't mind being remade for newer generations. They're classics. And they will typically spawn interest into the classic content itself, which is a good thing for society.
ETA: I feel the same way when people complain about adaptations of Jane Austen works and why we can't just "leave it alone" after the 1995 Pride and Prejudice version. There's lots of new actors/actresses I'd love to see in properties like that (see Anna Joy Taylor in Emma).

Shelley described Frankenstein's monster as an 8-foot-tall, hideously ugly creation, with translucent yellowish skin pulled so taut over the body that it “barely disguised the workings of the arteries and muscles underneath,” watery, glowing eyes, flowing black hair, black lips, and prominent white teeth
That's nightmare shite

The last time we got a true adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein was in fricking 1992 and was a television movie. The last time a true adaptation was actually in theaters was 1931. So what the frick are you talking about, man?
Del Toro NAILS gothic themes and this is the one of the most famous gothic novels of all time and one of my favorites. Wish it wasn’t a Netflix deal but I think he’ll knock it out of the park.

No, Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein came out in 1994, in theaters, directed by Kenneth Branagh.

It was actually adapted from the Peggy Webling play, like Dracula was adapted from the Deane and Balderston Play.

I tried to pare the list down by removing shorts and obvious animated fare. Yes, some of these include brief appearances by the creature and/or doctor, but this also excludes films with characters that are almost explicitly the creature in a modified form (e.g. Ex Machina).
