Nickelodeon launches studio to make more Avatar and Legend of Korra content
quote:

Nickelodeon has announced the launch of Avatar Studios, a new division dedicated to creating more original movies and TV shows based on Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. The studio's first project is being described as "an animated theatrical film," which should begin production sometime in 2021.

Like the recently unveiled Rugrats reboot series, Avatar Studios' movies and TV series will debut on the Paramount Plus streaming service, as well as Nickelodeon platforms, other third-party platforms, and theaters.

"It's hard to believe it's been 19 years since we created Avatar: The Last Airbender," said Avatar and Korra co-creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino in a joint statement. "But even after all that time, there are still many stories and time periods in Aang's world that we are eager to bring to life. We are fortunate to have an ever-growing community of passionate fans that enjoys exploring the Avatarverse as much as we do. And with this new Avatar Studios venture we have an unparalleled opportunity to develop our franchise and its storytelling on a vast scale, in myriad exciting ways and mediums.

if it doesn't have

quote:

Avatar and Korra co-creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino

in complete control then:
-Nickelodeon is stupider than a box of hammers.
-I don't want to see it.

This can be so easy. Just give Konietzko and DiMartino a blank check and let them run. Only advice I would give is do more Ang stuff than Korra stuff. Other than that, hands off.

My daughter will be stoked. She has watched the series at least three or four time since I introduced her to it.

This is fantastic news. Would love to see a dark Azula series with a redemption arc. Also a follow on to the original series with Zuko searching for his mother. Maybe the two could be combined.

I wonder if they will adapt the comics into movies?

Rumor is that it's two hours chronicling the life and times of the cabbage vendor.

Seriously though, I hope they learned a lot from what happened to the Star Wars universe and don't screw it up.

ATLA was fantastic and had a satisfying ending.
The time that elapsed after ATLA was filled in by backstory in Korra, which was also great and had a satisfying ending.

I, for one, don't think they should revisit ATLA or Korra. Both series were satisfying and complete. IMO they should do prequels, and hit up some avatars prior to Aang. Kyoshi anyone?

Otherwise, skip forward a generation and do the next avatar after Korra, make him a modern age Avatar.

The next era could be a future age avatar. Think transformers meets element bending. I mean, go full Japan-homage here.

I just don't want the same characters. I think they are perfect the way they are.

Man, they should totally try to make a live action movie based on the comics. I hear M. Night Shamalamadingdong is available.

Except we never got grown up uncle Sokka and aunt Suki.

Have you read any of them? Almost picked up the Lost Adventures recently, and may do that now. Considering The Search, but may wait and see what the creators do with the studio first on that one.

I’d like for them to complete the cycle. Do a modern Avatar and then cyberpunk Avatar. I do think the spirit energy concept has a ton of potential that has barely been scrapped the surface of.

I’m with you, but if they move forward onto the Earth Avatar, I would like for them to bring back Zaheer as a primary antagonist. Zaheer is probably the single most threatening villain an Avatar has ever faced (even over Vaatu) and he’s more than capable of being a threat within the Spirit World. Maybe Zaheer doesn’t return to his body one day and then waits for Korra to pass to enact his next major plan. Plus an Iroh vs Zaheer spirit battle that would be Inception meets Dr Strange would be epic.

Cyberpunk! Man that could be so cool.
Have the Avatar in the modern Avatar era fail, with the bad guy "winning" by closing the spirit world, and killing bending for everyone. But write it so that it's what the Avatar kind of really wanted. Basically bending had gotten out of hand along with the nuclear age and modern technology.

Cyberpunk Avatar could be completely surprised by all his/her abilities. Almost like an Aang 2.0. An avatar in an ultra futuristic world where he/she is the only bender? That could be really, really cool.

Here’s the route I’d like for them to take: The Earth Avatar is from Republic City and is kind of a combo of Aang and Korra. He loves everything fun that comes with being the Avatar but like Aang can’t handle the responsibility. He’s only used his role as Avatar for fame and fortune... then one day shite completely hits the fan and now he’s finally expected to do his actual job. Maybe by the end have a showdown with the spirit responsible for Raava and Vaatu’s initial separation that results in a ton of the world being destroyed, but results in a new spirit portal being created and a mass input of spiritual energy to the physical world.

As for the Cyperpunk concept, the Avatar is from the Sun Warriors and she grows up with minimal technology compared to the rest of the world. The 5 Nations are no more and most humans live in floating cities propelled by spirit energy. Replicants and androids are common and largely second class citizens. Main antagonist would be an artificial life form that has revived lion turtles to make a vast bending army and has cloned Aang’s DNA so he himself can bend the 4 elements, with his ultimate goal possessing the actual Avatar to rule over the physical and spiritual world. I think that could be a pretty solid two series there.

Hell yeah, I'd watch those!

The best part about it is that the original creators can probably come up with stuff way better than we can.

If they really wanted to get freaky with the whole cyberpunk thing, they could go Ghost in the Shell on it and make an android the next avatar.

Where's the suggestion box at? LOL

Given that the original series was actually heavily inspired by Ghost in the Shell, I’ll be shocked if there wouldn’t be some major nods towards it if we get cyberpunk Avatar. The initial concept for the series was Aang would be frozen in the ice for a thousand years and came into a cyberpunk environment, but the creators decided it was too close in concept to Samurai Jack and that they’d be accused of ripping it off, so they decided to make Aang frozen for 100 years instead.

And it’s been clear for years that Avatar has the potential to match Star Wars or Lord of the Rings as far as universal appeal is concerned, but Nick abused the property pretty much from the onset. Yeah, they know it’s their magnum opus, but since it wasn’t selling toys they put it on the sidelines. Given that Avatar has been compared favorably to the Star Wars sequel trilogy repeatedly, hopefully they’ve learned from them on what not to do.

I think most everyone would like more Zaheer. That's about the only way most anyone would tolerate more of Korra.

Otherwise, new avatar or previous avatar.

At worst, older/grown up Ang and the gang would make everyone happy.
