Would you listen to all six and half hours of Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit” on your headphones?

Netflix is toying with giving customers a podcast-like experience for its streaming content: It has launched a test of an audio-only option for mobile devices, initially for Android, that lets users disable video and listen to the audio of a TV show or movie in the background.

Netflix doesn’t really know how many users would be interested in the feature — that’s the point of the test, after all.

Subscribers in the test can toggle to audio-only mode by selecting a “Video Off” button in the Netflix playback screen. Users must opt-in to use the feature for every title and every session. For now, interactive content isn’t supported in audio-only mode.

Then it is no longer a motion picture or teleVISION series. It's just radio. The purpose of all the money and time invested in filming is to tell the story outside of just the dialogue, and in doing so to add all the nuances necessary for drama and effect.

This is the reason why upcoming generations are so out of touch with reality, because shite like this pampers them and simply feeds their need for immediate gratification. This is dumb.

I do agree it would be good for stand up and such.

I'd definitely do this for things I've seen a billion times, like Futurama.

Yup. Used to download comedies and listen to them on road trips. That was before podcasts became huge though.

Yeah I could see them going for exclusive Netflix podcasts about their original content

Episode by episode breakdown with the writers and cast.

Watchmen did a similar thing when it came out

Young punks don't remember the days when old school Star Trek fans' only option was to record reel to reel and cassette tapes of Original Series episodes.

Like you wouldn't listen to Burr and Chappelle in your car.

The benefit of this is that you're not tempted to watch while you're driving.

You're the one getting all worked over this. It because of people like you things are such shite at times now. They arent taking away the TV option just adding the audio only option AKA it does affect you at all. But you still want to bitch about it.

I for one will use this. I have a desk job and keep an AirPod on most of the day adn can listen to what i would like. Will gladly listen to comedies that i have already seen countless times.

Great test by Netflix IMO

I used to fall asleep to the audio of the office. I would have used it for that show, and that show only.

I like to listen to British narrated documentaries while falling asleep, so I don’t hate this idea

I used to do this on long trips and just wouldn't watch the video. For rewatchable comedies, I already can see in my head what is happening and hearing the audio is entertaining.

I grew up in the late 70s/early 80s listening to Old Time radio cassettes of the 40s/50s shows with murder mysteries/whodunits, sci-fi/ufo's, horror/thrillers, superheroes, and old comedy shows. I like the idea.

Much like reading a good book, what your imagination can conjure is arguably more compelling than what a television production can depict.

I even remember thinking that the only real chilling part of the Blair Witch Project was actually when the movie theater screen purposely went pitch black for about two minutes and all you could hear was the frantic audio of the characters. It reminded me of good ole radio frights.

I often throw my phone in my pocket with headphones and stream a netflix comedy special while I'm mowing the lawn...would definitely be handy to have this option for times like that. Not a ton of use out there for this but certainly a nice feature.

Before VHS was available I recorded Star Wars on a tape and would listen to it often.

There is a website that has audio files of movies and TV but a easy to use format and downloadable would be nice.
