I am sure this has been discussed ad nauseum, but I don't follow much of the discussions and have missed a few episodes here and there.
My question is:
Did Ned know Jon's true lineage? Seems hard to believe he didn't. But knowing who Jon was, Ned's actions leading up to his death really make no sense at all...right?

He knew, but I don't think he knew that Jon wasn't a bastard (sand).
And even if he knew that, how would he prove that Jon was the true heir to the throne?
Only now can it be proven with bran has the three eyed raven and that scroll Sam somehow remembered.

The average person who watches this show has no idea what's going on. There was poster on here who didn't know Sam or Tyrion's names.

I can't remember half their names, but know the characters. They just have too many characters with weird names that it is easy to forget many of them and sometimes the simple names like Sam get lost in the confusion.

It's the child of his best friend's sister whom they believed to have been kidnapped and raped. Why would Robert kill the child? He wasn't that type of person.

Go rewatch the last episode of season 6 called Winds of Winter. There's a flashback that Bran watches. Make sure Closed Captions are on since you missed it the first time. See your question answered and feel

The only people who actually bought that are Robert and children. Everyone knew they actually ran off together. Robert or Tywin would have had the kid killed without question.
