In the real world, he was the good guy.

More of a technical stretch, but so is Nicholson in A Few Good Men,...even though DiCaprio got top billing in Gangs of New York, as talented as he is, whenever he shared a scene with DDL, it was amateur hour for Leo.

Edit to add: Walter Huston in Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

Peter Sellers in The Pink Panther. David Niven got top billing in the first movie and the series was originally supposed to center around his thief character. Sellers' performance as Inspector Clouseau not only outshined everyone in the movie, but his character replaced Niven as the face of the franchise.

Good call, and the sequel, A Shot in the Dark was infinitely more funny in my opinion.

I always thought Johnny was the shining star of the outsiders

Macchio nailed every scene

-pony’s happy go lucky best friend

-sweet kid running from problems at home

-rattled from stabbing a guy to death

-bold, brave, and willing to accept his punishment as long as pony gets home safe

-unflappable around Dally and Pony

-children’s hero

-dying in hospital

Damn stay gold always gets me

A bit of a hard sell for me.

Anthony Hopkins won an Academy Award for his performance, and his Hannibal Lecter character is rated the No. 1 movie villain of all time by AFI, so I would at least question whether he was "outshined".

Sean Penn in Carlito's Way.

Kills the part, outclasses Pacino, and ranks up there on the list of all time most detestable movie villains

Ron Taylor and James D. Turner in Trading Places. The movie didn't even give their names. It simply referred to them as "Big Black Guy" and "Even Bigger Black Guy."

The fact that neither won an Oscar is an absolute CRIME!
