MoviePass Suspends Service Citing Technical Problems, Plans to Recapitalize Company
quote:
Starting July 4, MoviePass will be out of commission for the next several weeks — at least — with the struggling theater-subscription service provider saying it needs to fix technical issues and finish work on a new version of its app.
There was also a hint that the money-losing MoviePass business is running low on funds. The company, in announcing the temporary shutdown, said it “plans to use this time to recapitalize in order to facilitate a seamless transition and improved subscriber experience once the service continues.”

I mean, how did they expect to make money in the first place?

They were doing fine for years at $30 a month. At $9.99 it became a pyramid scheme.

I think theaters have begun to offer similar schemes. They are able to cut out the middleman and do it more effectively. Hopefully these models can bring down movie going costs. Between the increasing costs and decreasing product quality, I almost never go the the theaters anymore which is a shame.

Meanwhile AMC is doing very well with A-List. Over 800k subscribers in its first year. What got me to join is that with A-List I can see Dolby Cinema, IMAX, or 3D movies for free too. I just need to see one of those per month to break even.
