And then we've only had one (Shape of Water) since then.

The Shape of Water was also a movie homage steeped in "history of movies" nostalgia. It's an outlier, but it makes sense it was the outlier that broke through. Even if it's a garbage movie.

Everything Everywhere being the dominant frontrunner is fascinating this year is fascinating, and it would be more of a strange winner than Shape of Water. It's much more of a genre-y genre movie.

I’d add American Beauty in 2000. Almost as bad as Crash. Well , not really. But still so cliche I was laughing out loud at the “ serious message “ parts.

While it didn’t win, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is one of the worst films I have seen nominated for best picture.

Crash is such a joke. What was the push for something like that in 2005? We were still pretty normal. It’s a movie that people would try to push in 2020.

Shakespeare in Love and English Patient deserve all the "overrated" and inclusion on lists like this as they can get, but I also agree that Crash is just awful.

Among the worst of the best have to include:
—The Artist
—Moonlight
—Nomadland

Maybe a bump, but I thought nomadland was one of the best films I've ever seen.

By chance, did you see the movie as an axe to grind against capitalism? I've seen a lot of people dislike it because of that, but IMO that completely misses the point of the movie.

Oh yeah moonlight. That one sucked but I see why it won. So brave. Lol

They actually left the original woke bullshite academy award winner off the list: Gentleman's Agreement. What a turd. The best actress award was warranted though. She was the only decent thing in the movie.

Moonlight deserves to be somewhere on that list.

but this list needs Ordinary People on it.

Imagine the pitch. "It'll be like a very special episode of a Norman Mailer sitcom that lasts 2 whole hours."

Gay and minority right? Should have added slave for insurance.

My pick is The Artist.
