They should have cast Dwayne Johnson, but only if they plan to cover the "Upon this Rock I will build my church" part.

How many multi-page threads have turned to shite from the mere mention of Idris Elba as Bond?

This is cringey af.
Why even attempt the accents when they're all different or just disappear altogether?

True. People may hate Passion of the Christ, but Mel Gibson doing that movie in Aramaic and Latin was a thing of beauty.

No thanks. Liberal atheist Hollywood bullshite.

It really was.
It just makes no sense to me why every movie set in a foreign country tries to make us think that the natives all speak English with an accent.
Like that part in Wonder Woman where Steve Trevor is impersonating a German officer and does that by talking like Schultz from Hogan's Heroes.

If its made by a huge studio - it's going to have a certain slant...with Mary teaching Jesus or something.
The comment section is gold - all they are talking about is "Hollywood whitewashing" - because Phoenix isn't brown or black.

The fact that it is a March release kind of lowers expectations for me.
Oh yeah, and this is a Weinstein Company film.

But weren't all the apostles and Jesus Jews??
Tell me , when have the Jews ever been extremely dark skinned or black? (besides the lost Ethiopia tribe)
Yep... Looks like a regular Wesley Snipes
Shouldn't it also tell you all you need to know when the most contreversial aspect if the film is because they shoehorned in a black dude as Peter and Joaquin Phoenix not being dark skinned enough??
The film is essentially a slap in the face to about a billion and half people. I'm not offended by tbe film because I know who's making it, but I am offended they have the gaul to so non chalantly produce a film that knowingly pisses so many people off while the same people wouldn't even dream of producing such a film about... .... Uh hum.... Some other religions...

I think there are two things that are going to really trigger people here.
1) Peter is black
2) They are making Mary Magdalene out to be one of the most important leaders of the early Church with the Apostles attempting to silence her views.

Considering it would be easier for him to pass as a middle eastern man, it shouldn't.

Number 2 is the most troubling one. I couldn't care less if Peter is black. We all know they were all basically physically resembling modern day Palestinians. They weren't white or black or even what American Jewish people look like.
The reason this is bullshite is because the story will be fiction contrived to support a twisted political narrative.

I fully expect that to be the angle because that has been a long narrative in some circles.
That she was made into a Prostitute by the Middle Ages church to basically write her out of history.
Although the decline of Mary of Magdala’s reputation as apostle and leader most likely began shortly after her death, the transformation to penitent prostitute was sealed on Sept. 14, 1591, when Pope Gregory the Great gave a homily in Rome that pronounced that Mary Magdalene, Luke’s unnamed sinner, and Mary of Bethany were, indeed, the same person.
Instead, her true biblical portrait is being resurrected, and this “apostle to the apostles” is finally taking her rightful place in history as a beloved disciple of Jesus and a prominent early church leader.
“People see this as a positive, constructive way to show they support women’s equality,” says Schenk, who believes reclaiming Mary Magdalene’s reputation as an early church leader will have implications for women’s leadership in the church today, including the ordination of women.
