Feel free to explain how it could be considered anything besides a sitcom

That would be Parker Lewis Can't Lose or Better Off Ted.

Malcolm was very well received, adored by fans and I'm sure won awards.

And it lasted 6 years.

Agreed. Consistently hilarious and clever, also quite original characters. Def one of the best comedy shows of all time.

how the frick is it underrated?

It was beloved.

Was Family Ties, Cheers and Seinfeld underrated?

It was a super popular show.

It lasted longer than most sitcoms but less than only the absolute greats like Seinfeld and MASH.

Malcolm lasted 6 years for a sitcom...that's like a gold album and far more than most. Meaning it was positively rated for a long time.

10 years is considered the apex and Platinum for a sitcom.

You ain’t the only one. I get why people like it but it just drags on to me. The British office was perfect - 12 episodes - it told the story and got out.

I have made it known many times that I don’t care for The Office’s “cringe” style humor

I"m not bashing you or anything since taste is subjective and everyone has their own opinion, but how much of the office have you seen? There are undoubtedly moments of big time cringe that I also don't really care for, but that has to be like less than 10% of the series. I definitely wouldn't call office a "cringe humor show".

I cannot relate to the characters

I think there are characters in the office that are more relatable than most over the top sitcoms. That's a separate debate though.

all of the characters are horrible horrible people

not sure about that. Everyone on earth, you and I included, have had times where if a camera crew documented our almost every move for 9 straight years people woudl say "that was a shitty thing to do". I don't think most of them are "bad people" though.

Dwight: sociopath a-hole who will do anything for a sale
Jim: complete sociopath who tortures coworkers for sport
Pam: enabler who constantly toys with people’s emotions and uses jealousy as a crutch (her and Jim deserve each other as they’re both absolute monsters).
Michael: just the worst. He’s not just a silly, incompetent, buffoon who doesn’t realize how he’s being offensive or inappropriate. He is a careless, sexual predator, a petty backstabber, a brown nose, and yet the show constantly tries to make you feel sorry for him or believe he might someday turn the corner. Nope, he’s just a pathetic bastard coated bastard with bastard filling.

The sad thing is the side characters are probably even worse except for Creed and the warehouse guy.” (Dude from Hot Tub Time Machine).

I thought it was

"Sitcom" is a portmanteau of situational comedy. I'm sure "The Office" classifies as such.

meh. He is hellbent on being elite at his job, not sure that makes him a terrible terrible person.

quote:

Jim: complete sociopath who tortures coworkers for sport

we're calling his pranks with dwight torture now? Interesting. Sociopaths are also generally anti-social which doesn't seem to describe jim very much IMO.

quote:

Pam: enabler who constantly toys with people’s emotions and uses jealousy as a crutch

I don't think you'll find any arugment that she's a bitch especially with her jim/roy stuff early on. I don't particularly care for pam.

Monsters!? Come on now.

He is exactly what you described to begin with. To a T. In a nutshell he's a social outcast that isn't used to having friends or companionship that ultimately only wants to be loved and accepted. Not sure how exactly he's a sexual predator. And I didn't realize being careless or a brown noser makes someone a "horrible horrible person".

quote:

he sad thing is the side characters are probably even worse except for Creed

are you sure you have your story straight here? You're saying the peeople you mentioned are just the worst, awful, truly horrible people. Then you say creed is an exception? If we're judging "horrible people" creed is almost surely THE worst.

Creed

He doesn’t try to pretend that he’s a good person or just someone making an honest mistake who you should pity for being a lonely outcast (I’m parodying Michael, because he clearly uses that routine to get out of legitimate criticisms when he knows full well what he is doing). Creed knows who he is and what he has done. He doesn’t apologize for it or run from it. I can respect that. The show doesn’t make you pity Creed or empathize with Creed. Creed just is.

re: Malcolm in the Middle was the best sitcom of the 2000s
You could generalize every character in sitcom history if you only focus on their negatives

Your original argument of not liking “cringe type comedy” was a much better take.

Michael is also brutally honest with people and has breakdowns where he knows he's lonely and needs friends. Not sure what specific moments you're referencing but it's not like he always plays the steve urkel "did i doo thaattt??" routine. He is human and shows weakness and vulnerability quite a bit.

quote:

Creed knows who he is and what he has done. He doesn’t apologize for it or run from it. I can respect that

so an actual, truly bad person gets a pass from you simply because they own up to it? Creed has made reference to disappearing someone and taking their identity, he got debbie brown fired for his mistake wiht the watermark, he's blatantly stolen cash from coworkers under the guise of a sympathy card, he put his own name on someone else's wedding present (thereby making it seem like that person didn't get anything), and about a hundred other examples of being an actual shitty person.

Like I said in the beginnign IDGAF if you don't like the show that's totally your call, but I think your reasons for not liking it are pretty far off the mark.

Can't even talk about awesome scenes like this without someone derailing the shite out of it with the office.

I like The Office, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Always Sunny better, but that's just my opinion.
