I just recently got YouTube TV and I find myself watching X-Files re-runs on Comet more than anything else. No woke nonsense. No political messaging. Just well written and engaging stories coupled with great dialogue.

It was one of the top shows of the decade.

The 2000s had The Sopranos and The Wire. The 20-Teens had Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones. I'm not sure what will emerge as an iconic show from the 2020s, but I think they are making TV like the X-Files still, you just have forgotten how much garbage they made in the 90s too.

I will say that I'm more likely to watch and enjoy a rewatch of a good show than most new shows I try these days. But the peaks are as good or better than ever as more money and talent flows to TV production.

I always thought X files messaging was always 'what if the government was lying to us about everything and corrupt?' Which was a somewhat novel concept pre-9/11, further explored when we had movies like Enemy of the State (1998) about illegal mass surveillance of citizens.

Obviously these concepts would not work today lol.

"The truth is out there" was literally the slogan.

Would not fly today. In 2022 it would be unwatchable.

Ironically that slogan means more today than it ever has.

I actually started X-Files from the top a few weeks ago. It scared me as a kid growing up so I never watched it. Only a few sparse episodes. I caught a couple of Robert Patrick episodes on Comet, and I loved it, so it prompted me to watch the whole thing. I think I am on episode 18 of season 1 right now.

I'm enjoying it so far. Seems like it holds up. Love the 90s nostalgia.

The X-Files today would essentially have a plot revolving around Mulder being banished from the FBI for misgendering the aliens.

The main story arc is about the government covering up a massive conspiracy regarding aliens. It's practically the story that would shock none of us if it came out tomorrow.

One of the episodes talked about FEMA's extreme powers and basically used it to declare martial law in an area that even stopped FBI agents from continuing their investigation. I never thought about FEMA like that and will never look at them the same way again. If they made the show today I'm sure DHS would get an episode like that as well.

That's part of its charm. It could make your skin crawl and put you on the edge of your seat.

Re-Watched X-Files on Hulu. Still great all these years later. The mixture of humor, the sinister and the irreverent was perfect.

This is what I loved about it as a kid. I’m shocked my parents let me watch it honestly now that I’ve begun to re-watch as an adult.

Peak X-Files followed by prime Art Bell on Coast to Coast AM was one hell of a night

The X-Files is my personal favorite show ever. Seasons 2-5 were absolute gold. 1 and 6 also very good. Others aren't bad.

Great combo of standalone and arc eps. Funny, dramatic, clever. I haven't rewatched in a while. Might be time.

Its my understanding that people that were/are X-Files fans weren't crazy about the Mulder-less episodes, but I am a big Robert Patrick fan, the two or three I've seen I enjoyed very much so.

TV's in a weird situation right now; almost all the good stuff is coming from premium services. Been awhile since the networks put something good out, NCIS maybe the last good offering.
Better money and more creative freedom on a pay service.

For actual quality, Disney+ is probably pumping the best out currently. You have movie actors and an inhouse deal with ILM, but the genres are limited and the seasons are short (and maybe just bridges to the next epic movie). Hard to build a deep storyline with 6-8 episodes.

That's what I figured this thread was going to be about when I saw the title. I'd love to see quality shows go back to having quality stand-alone episodes. And more episodes per season.

I like him too, but those episodes just felt like a different show, following generic FBI agents.

I was much less pissy when I was younger but I don't remember having a problem with the Robert Patrick episodes. And Annabeth Gish has always been cute

Vince Gilligan .

Vince was involved with over 80 episodes of the show as producer or/and writer.

Who did Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul ?
