re: M. Night Shyamalan's "The Village" is actually a solid movie

I've always enjoyed it. Thought it was a smart movie with a solid twist.

Everyone...fwiw, there are more people in this thread who legit liked the movie rather than DR RC'd it.

I would've liked unbreakable more if Bruce willy and Samuel L switched roles. Seeing Samuel L all frail and delicate felt so wrong, like seeing your dad get beat up.

I'm with you Killz. Probably my fave MNS movie. And I even knew the twist before I saw the movie. Still loved it.

There are also people who say that the ending was given away early on in the movie, but I've never heard a good explanation that I can remember
What gave it away to me was the way they spoke. They kept switching between a colonial, antebellum, post WW II, and modern day English accent.

People don't like being wrong.
They thought there were monsters for 3/4 of the movie, then when the curtain was pulled back and it was just people, they felt cheated.

just rewatched and lsufan3405955x10^-3 is wrong because SPOILERS
the photographs and newspaper clippings aren't until a cutaway scene right when the blind girl is climbing the wall. after that there is only the park ranger scene w/ m night cameo where he hints that higher authorities are covering up the existence of the village (even saying it has been arranged to be a no-fly zone) and the scene where she returns with the medicine. all this takes place with <10 minutes left, not halfway through the movie like he was saying.

I remember leaving the theater and not liking it... Though I've needed this thread to jog my memory on what it was even about..

The movie stunk.
Tell me... why was everybody speaking in Shakespearean era English if they were actually modern people?

When I found out the monsters were fake I was bummed.
Then when one showed up in the forest I was like "OH shite ITS ON" and then it was the retarded kid and he died and I was bummed again.
It being set in current times actually makes sense considering what they were doing, all those "elders" should go to prison

That's what made the movie so great to me, is that the fear of the monsters did not depend on it being real monsters, it was a look into psychological fear, and especially of the unknown, and how humans if put back into a "past" situation would revert back to any old superstitions that humans have always had.
And, as far the accents, I don't know if that was planned by MNS, or just crappy accents usually in movies.

I like Signs way more than The Village.

I like Signs as much as The Village.
People want to slam Village for the twist ending, but the whole water thing kind of eats at me though.
I just like the pacing and idea behind Signs.

Same.
I actually haven't watched Sixth Sense since it was released. I really need to rewatch that. I watched Unbreakable last week, and I actually thought it wasn't bad.

From what I remember about this movie, it was portrayed the wrong way. All the previews and things were for a horror movie almost. So that is what the audience expected. My older brother saw it before me and came back saying, "It wasn't bad but it wasn't what I thought it was going to be". When I watched it without any preconceived notions as to what it was "supposed" to be, it thought it was pretty good. Good blot twist that kept you guessing.

I could not get past the HUGE plot hole (water as weakness leftover from "Unbreakable" apparently). The worst part of it was the aliens being out in a corn field at night when corn gets covered with dew. Other than that, it was a decent SciFi pic with good acting.
I thought Unbreakable was a much better film. But I'm a sucker for quirky superhero movies (The Specials, Mystery Men, The Tick live series, etc).

i did not like it the 1st time i watched it - watched it again with my wife, and i find i actually enjoyed it.

Loved "The Village". I was expecting thriller and loved the "twist" ending. In my opinion, it was well thought out and I never saw it coming. I was so surprised by the ranger showing up.
As for Signs, I liked it enough. The best part of the movie is waiting for that Alien to show up in that video of the birthday party. That shite was intense.
However, many of M. Night's movies fell short. The Happening's trailers were creepy enough, but the explanation was shite. Lady in the Water plain sucked. I don't even consider Last Airbender his because there was source material, even though I actually liked it.
Unbreakable is probably my favorite M Night movie.
