Just did a rewatch with my kids of the original LOTR trilogy and I just want to say.....
Wow how freaking good were those movies!!
Stand the test of time. Amazing and I mean absolutely astounding casting. These actors WERE those characters. Just amazing.

How old are your kids?

My oldest just turned 8. Wondering when I should watch them with him.

I've been trying to find a movie that i could watch with my 6 year old that i think he would find amazing. This might be it. Or it might be too scary for him. We'll see.

Mine are 17, 14, 11 and 8.

The two older ones are the ones I watched with.
My two younger ones will watch and participated for some of the parts but it’s hard to hold their attention the whole time in three three hour movies.

There is a part in ROTK where the orcs catapult the heads of men into Minas Tirith. Yeah my 8yo girl didn’t like that.

Last time I was with my family me and my pops had it on and my 2.5 year old niece loved it. We were wondering how she'd react to the orcs but she took it in stride. Maybe that's too young for it to be scary? I don't know, I don't have kids. All I know is that she wanted to play swords the rest of the time I was there

That perfect combination of practical effects with just a touch of CGI. Like Jurassic Park. It’s real enough that it doesn’t feel aged and the effects don’t feel hokey compared to what you can do today.

I went through them with my kids when they were young. I would read a section to them and then watch the part of the movie with them that goes along with it. We all really enjoyed it. It took over a year to go through all 3.

I mean is it? Shelob is scary, Gollum is very creepy, and the Nazgul have their own thing going on that is uneasy, and the Balrog is just plain badass. I don't see why it's exactly scarier than anything you'd see in the Star Wars OT.

If he's watched Jurassic Park, then he's fine. Those scenes are way scarier than anything in Lord of the Rings perhaps barring Shelob.

Don't know why but LOTR is a must watch every year around the Holidays.

Perhaps it's b/c I saw them all in the theaters around Christmas, but it's just engrained now.

This also makes me miss big budget serious blockbusters released in December.

Jackson isn't the person at fault there. He had 1 year to get the Hobbit right when he had 3 years with Lord of the Rings. The executives also wanted to make as much money as possible so they spread it way too thin. The Battle of the Five Armies is not enough material for a single film. Should have ended the First 1 escaping the Elves and meeting Bard and then started the second in Lake Town.

But notice the scenes he can't afford to frick up he pulls off masterfully. The Unexpected Party, the Trolls, Riddles in the Dark, Mirkwood Spiders, Bilbo meeting Smaug, Smaug's death, and Thorin's death were all done pretty much perfectly. He focused on those scenes when writing and directing and threw in the other scenes in one draft and half assed it because he didn't have the time nor the appropriate amount of material to make it good. There are some fantastic fan edits out there that do the original films justice. Look for one if you can find it.

Definitely no worse than these.

Well of course. How else will he learn critical thinking skills?

There are some quotes from him where he said no one really knew how to get something of that magnitude done yet. Filming essentially nine hours of three movies all at one time. So he would film a part and would give the studio just enough to greenlight the next thing he needed to do and he was able to keep them essentially in the dark without revealing his full plan until they had invested enough they were forced to go all in with him. So he kind of strung it along until it was too late to go back.

The second time around the studio had dollars in their eyes and he had no control like he did the first time. So see the above poster. That’s exactly what he did. He focused on the important stuff and half assed the rest. The fan cuts are better than the original.
