KoTH Fans- Question About Arlen.

Am I the only one that noticed how much Arlen grew throughout the series? It went from being your basic small, country, conservative, town whose biggest employer was a pork processing plant that was freaking out about Mega Lo Mart coming to town in the early seasons to a booming metroplex with several different malls, tons of restaurants, super nice country clubs, gated communities, movie theaters, a booming downtown area, and even started attracting hippies, hipsters, artists, gay couples, and other subgroups that are associated with more urban type atmospheres. It's like as the Hills grew as a family through different social circumstances Arlen grew too. Kinda deep... Man.
Also, by all means feel free to discuss anything else that comes to your mind about this most excellent of animated series.

I'm sure Peggy will find some way to take credit for Arlen's growth.

Well, when you have a substitute teacher who had won Substitute Teacher of the Year three times in the school system, people are gonna flock there. And when that person is also a realtor and Notary Public the sky's the limit.

I believe the artist colony was in McMaynerberry and the hippies were in the woods, which were probably out of the city limits. Arlen's probably not that big of a town. They did Cowboys training camp one year. Those typically go to small towns.

Judge may have used it as another way to keep throwing social change-ups at Hank. The more hip or confounding the challenge - the funnier Hank's squareness got for me.
And a few favorites:
"He's using show business!"
"Peggy, I'm trying to contain an outbreak & you're driving the monkey to the airport!"
"Why am I wearing the hat?"

Nah the Cowboys training camp was in Witchita Falls, although Hank did make a video trying to get them to move it to Arlen.

Hey Hank was hip he laughed at the Tony Danza
Here's a couple of mine:
"Bobby! You can't be break dancing in the middle of the street people will think you ain't right."
"Peggy they weren't dancing like we used to dance. They were......... Enjoying it."
When asked by Dale's dad if he was gay
"What!? No! I sell propane!"

Like Brosef said, the show encorporated other surrounding communities. There was even an East Arlen.
And don't forget they had an Army base, so it wasn't too tiny.
It makes me think of one of those areas where there's a cluster of small municipalities within driving distance of a city. Not exactly a suburb, but not exactly a "small town" either.

After Judge and the original crew stopped providing anything but the voices the new crew kowtowed to Fox demands that the show be more syndication friendly. It's why we lost the story arcs and started the for the convenience of the story settings, like Peggy's mom.

You make a good point, but one thing that leads me to believe a lot of this is in Arlen is that we see Bobby and Joseph riding their bikes to the different malls among other places. And in one episode Bobby mentions that some girls were about to pick him up for a date at the mall "and not just any mall, The Northside Mall!" to which Joseph replies "You just got bumped up two malls!" and then the girls come by on their bikes to get him.
But then again continuity kind of went out the window with this show when they could never explain how Peggy ended up in Arlen from Montana

It's not that there wasn't an explanation, it's that they completely made up this story. Don't you remember how Peggy played softball at another high school in town and the only saving grace to her ruining the meal for her and Hank's first Valentine's day in high school was that Hank had mono? The Montana episode was funny for many reasons. The wise old/demented Cowboy....Hank in the Range Rover passing out at the castration... but it's mere existence in the series angers me because it came out of nowhere.

Exactly! Hell they even showed Peggy's mom in the Valentine's Day in Arlen picking on her about trying to make Beef Wellington.
And then of course there was the whole fiasco of the Thanksgiving episode where they were supposed to be flying to Montana to spend it with Peggy's family. And don't even get me started on the conundrum about Peggy's brother, Hoyt.
But one thing is for sure. The episode where they actually went to Montana is pretty damn funny. Hank and The Fonz listening to smooth Jazz and Hank telling the cowboys that keep messing with him that he's "complicated"

The town in the show obviously got more stuff in it as the show progressed... they needed more stories and characters.
But I picture Arlen being like one of the little suburbs of Dallas or something. Or like Denton or McKinney.

Very much in line with similar Texas "towns" like Round Rock, Katy, and Flower Mound.
When I was young Austin was smaller than Baton Rouge, now it's twice the size of NOLA. Growth is a common trend in many Texas communities.

Not to mention her success as a professional Musing author.

What part of the state is Arlen supposed to be in?
And just because it needs to be said, Mike Judge is a genius and prophet.

It seems to be all over the map. Sometimes south Texas, sometimes in the Dallas area.

It must be a geographical oddity like Bon Temps in True Blood or that general store in O Brother Where Art Thou. It seems like in one episode there was a sign that said it was 96 miles to Dallas. But then there have also been a couple of times where they made a day trip to Mexico. And in the episode where DiDi had the baby it was close enough to Houston that Bobby drove her from there to the Arlen hospital. So who knows .
