Yep. That's exactly why the government figured it would be easier to train oil patch baws to be astronauts than it would be to to train astronauts to work a drill.

Billy Bob Thornton is in a wheelchair for most of the movie with no explanation as to why and then later is walking around with no problem.

I think it would be.
These guys were just passengers.
Astronauts would have to learn to operate all the equipment the oil drillers use.

Correct. People like to forget the folks actually piloting the ship were trained astronauts.
The only issue I have is that their lives technically become more important if the idea is to actually make it back to Earth

The editing in this movie is atrocious.

In all my years of watching films, I've never seen such a heroic effort from a wonderful cast (outside the romantic leads) - trying to save such a terrible film from its terrible director and screenwriters. They did it so gleefully, too, like they knew it wouldn't make a difference, but dammit, they were all professionals.
On the other hand, Titanic is not that far off in second place.

Fixed it for you, this is much more believable.
I totally missed the Billy Bob wheelchair thing haha. Also, why do you need a mini gun on a rover?
