He didn't think Ethan Hawke was down to 'play the game' with the rest of them so he was gonna set him up to get murdered. And interesting fact if you listen to his phone call right before they go there he says "make sure that bathtub is clean for me honey," so basically that guy was so brazen about everything he was planning his own partners murder while he was right next to him

Because even after the whole incident where they robbed the guy Denzel gives him this whole talk about how if he wants to change the system he has to change it from the inside. Then he tells him how the shite ain't checkers, it's chess so I thought he had some master plan ready to take the dirty cops down.

After they seized the money and split it up between themselves Jake wouldn’t take his cut. Alonzo noticed that and kept it for him anyway. Later, though, Jake doesn’t kill the guy and play along in their role playing of how things will shake out for their rap story to the other investigators when they show up to the crime scene.

Jake still wouldn’t kill the guy even though all of them threatened him. But I think it was only after Jake pulled the gun on Alonzo that Alonzo truly planned his death with the Mexicans. Some theorists out there think Alonzo planned Jake’s death from the beginning because when Alonzo called him at the beginning of the movie he asked Jake if he spoke Spanish and had a reserve pistol to his main one.

I always thought it was a fortuitous coincidence Hawke happened to save his murderer's niece earlier in the day. Doing the right thing saved his life, seemingly endorsing his resistance to the crooked life through the rest of the day.

Also, there's a deleted scene where the murderer says to Hawke something to the effect of "I was hired to kill you before you arrived and the only reason I'm letting you go is because you happened to save my family member."

I was confused the first time I saw it by the continuity error mentioned above (probably 15 years ago) especially since the deleted scene confirms Hawke was being delivered certainly to be killed. Otherwise the movie makes it appear Denzel hadn't already decided Hawke's fate if he decided to break bad.

It's not a theory, it's certain Hawke was being set up from the beginning but they cut the scene where it's confirmed. It's in the deleted scenes.

Denzel can really play over the top characters well. He's got a knack for it. he guy is a really good actor. Back in t he early 1990's he got together with some British actors and Keanu Reeves and they did a movie based on Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing....he stole the movie.
