I swear for the first 15 minutes of the movie I thought I was watching a snl skit or something. Had to check a time or two to see if I was watching the real version or some “outtake” version.

That said, I though the end was really good but crazy how different it seemed from the first two.

That's some of the best action in the movie. And it was badass.

Because the first two Thor movies sucked and they didn't know what they were doing. Thor is inherently ridiculous, and they tried to make the first two movies way too serious. They really lucked out with Chris Hemsworth who has fantastic comedic timing. Save for this scene, they never tried to make the first two movies funny: LINK

As soon as they saw that scene they should have rewrote the entire script to be in that tone.

No offense, but do you live under a rock? Ever since it came out, all the talk has been how it feels more like a comedy.

The director is a really funny dude. Check out his interviews and behind the scenes videos.

Also, the movie definitely benefitted from not having NP, Tits McGee, and the nutty professor. They were the weak links of the first two movies.

See I disagree. I think the only way to pull of the inherently ridiculous IS to treat it seriously. Otherwise you completely kill willing suspension of disbelief. The LOTOR films and just about any good science fiction is an example.

It doesn’t have to be dark but the characters do have to act like what is going on is believable.

Piss poor example. Despite being in a fantasy universe, LotR is serious. It was inspired by Tolkien's heart wrenching experiences in World War I. The most comical character is probably Pippin, but he's a youngster completely taken out of his element that was inspired by one of Tolkien's friends who was killed in the war.

Thor isn't in the comics. Loki is innately a comical character. I don't think Thor is one of those dark characters you treat seriously.

Tolkien treated the content seriously...which is precisely what I was talking about and what made it special. PJ treated the movies the same way. You have to treat fantasy material seriously to make it work (IMO).

Thor was a comic character yes...but his lineage, magical weapon, abilities, etc. are no less “inherently ridiculous” than magic rings, elves that live forever, dragons, undead warriors, wizards and evil gods.

It was a pretty good Marvel movie.

I actually think they should've made the movie more weird

But Thor was never serious. The Lord of the Rings was from its inception. It's apples and oranges here. They're not remotely comparable. You might as well be comparing Superbad with Citizen Kane.

I thought it was just ok. Some parts were funny, others went a bit overboard with the comedy.

I think we’re talking past each other but I get your point.

Comic book material can be more fun than something like Conan or LOTR because of a difference in tone - but even in comic movies you can’t just treat it like slapstick comedy (except for Deadpool).

If you get too silly with material that is already inherently unbelievable it doesn’t work for me.

I thought it was a lot of fun. It didn't bother me that the tone was different than the first two. Or that Thor was different. In some ways, I thought there were improvements made to his character.

I guess my only complaint was that every single character had to have comedic elements. Some I thought were a little forced and didn't work for me. Maybe a little more balance would have been better. But that being said, I thought it was better than Thor 2 and A blast of a movie. It's a really fun time.
