Damn. One gets the feeling that even when the show is telling fiction, the fiction is not too far from the truth.

You mean both seasons of Narcos or Narcos and Narcos Mexico?

I watched first season of Narcos and Narcos Mexico but for some reason still have not gotten around to the second seasons of each

You should read the book “Hunting El Chapo.” Couldn’t put it down. The facts around the cartels are actually harder to believe than the fiction.

Spoiler*
I bet that poor old Gilberto and Miguel never thought that they would be spending their golden years 150 miles apart in the Carolinas. One in Federal prison in SC, the other in NC.
All those billions for what?

Eh 2 decades of being a few of the riches men in the world is probably still a better choice for them than the alternative of being dirt poor in one of the most dirt poor counties in the world
I doubt they have many regrets besides getting caught

Mexico is still being made but they might stop because they are getting too close to the present in the show. A location scout for the show was actually killed by one of the cartels

That happened before they even started production on Mexico S1.
So they’ve produced 2 entire seasons after that incident, they’ll be fine

A great read is also "The Power of the Dog," by Don Winslow. He spent 10 years researching the Mexican drug cartels and wrote this book and "The Cartel" after his research.
