Spotify is trying to corner the market on big podcasting it seems. They outright bought the Ringer and Bill Simmons' Podcast for $200 million in Feb. and just paid over $100 million for JRE rights (not buying the company.)

Sadly, this means Rogan clips will no longer brodacst on YouTube.

Though in the MMA world, Joe Rogan is largely seen as one of the chief commentators for the UFC, in reality, Rogan’s most successful business venture has been his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, which he has hosted for 11 years and has become one of the most popular podcasts in the world. And now, through a landmark deal with Spotify, Rogan is going to make a king’s ransom.

Yesterday, it was announced that Rogan will be moving his podcast exclusively to the Spotify platform, in a deal that is reportedly worth more than $100 million, per The Wall Street Journal. Rogan himself confirmed the move to Spotify with a statement released on his YouTube channel:
?

Hello everybody! I have an announcement. The podcast is moving to Spotify. I signed a multi-year licensing agreement with Spotify that will start on September 1. Starting on September 1, the entire JRE library will be available on Spotify as well as all the other platform, then, somewhere around the end of the year, it will become exclusive to Spotify, including the video version of the podcast. It will be the exact same show. I am not going to be an employee of Spotify. We are going to be working with the same crew doing the exact same show, the only difference will be it will now be available on the largest audio platform in the world. Nothing else will change. It will be free. It will be free to you, you just have to go to Spotify to get it. We’re very excited to begin this new chapter of the JRE and I hope you’re there when we cross over. Thanks.”

Rogan had reportedly been reluctant to host his podcast on the Spotify platform, citing superior revenue generation with other services.
However, recently, Spotify has invested heavily in acquiring other media companies and podcasts, making a concerted effort to widen its scope beyond just a music streaming service. Spotify issued a press release yesterday, praising their new partner’s work and citing Rogan’s place in culture as a key factor in their interest in bringing him onto the platform.

“Since its launch in 2009, the pioneering Joe Rogan Experience (JRE) has broken ground and built one of the most loyal and engaged fan bases in the world. Rogan brings his sensibilities as a stand-up comic to the show, and alongside dynamic and diverse guests, he fearlessly broaches far-ranging topics including neuroscience, sports, comedy, health, infectious disease, and our ever-changing culture—all with a mix of curiosity and humor. . .

“Bringing the JRE to Spotify will mean that the platform’s more than 286 million active users will have access to one of culture’s leading voices.”

Rogan’s show will debut on the platform on September 1st, and become exclusive to Spotify sometime later this year.

Good. YouTube as a creative platform needs to die. Spotify can't possibly set the bar any lower than YouTube in that regard

Why sadly? It's free on Spotify. YouTube needs to take more hits like this.

Can’t believe he sold out for $100MM. I wouldn’t even wear a mask for those peanuts.

I'm really interested to see how Spotify does the video aspect. As far as I have seen they've never done that before.

So you won’t have to pay for a Spotify subscription to watch it?

According to everything I've read they are keeping it free. You will need a free account though.

He didn’t sell out. He took cash. YouTube is trying to destroy his program, and now he’s bailing and with a shite ton of cash. He was put under massive scrutiny by YouTube simply by hosting Alex Jones and they’re not fond of him hosting members of the IDW either. One of the heads of YouTube is trying to shut down Ben Shapiro simply because her son started watching him and became a fan.

YouTube is getting what it deserves. Wouldn’t shock me if by August they shut down all the members of the IDW’s channels simply to make sure Biden is elected. The writing on the wall has been there for a while, and Rogan is leading the exodus out of YouTube. Well deserved by them. Hopefully he goes live again after they started going down on him after putting Jones on his podcast for a second time.

It would be Jones' third appearance actually.

He was on show #911 a few years ago and he got fricked up out of his mind by drinking whiskey and smoking joints on air. It was amazing. It was also the first time I was introduced to Eddie Bravo. He came in about halfway. It wasn't as good as Alex's second apparenace, but it was easily one of the best Joe Rogan episodes ever.

One of Steven Crowder's more recent shows he talked in pretty good detail about his year long war against YouTube. They won't take his videos down, but they've demonetized his channel and run algos meant to hide his videos from people not specifically searching for his channel.

In Joe's show yesterday he also let out that he believes Obamagate and told the guest to go listen to Jimmy Dior's explanation of it. And railed on Biden again.

ETA: The only thing I don't know that I've read is if the video will be free as well. I would think so though. The free version of Spotify just has more ads. Premium has none

That's absurd. Did Bleacher Report and The Hot Ones go for $500 million?

I like sports podcasts, but for some reason never really listened to Simmons/Ringer material and kind of forgot Russilo moved over there even though I liked him. I thought Ringer might’ve fetched more, they have a ton of pods and sold everything to Spotify.

Rogan essentially rented himself out to Spotify and gets to keep all the IP. But Rogans single show also averages almost 2.5 billion downloads a year

This should be a wake up call for the execs at YouTube. Joe Rogan is the #1 podcaster on the planet and even he can't stand how restrictive their website is becoming. I realize they're a private company and can do as they please, but their attacks on certain forms of speech have done much to piss off their content creators who actually do this for their livelihood.

The craziest part about it, Spotify stock was $163 before Rogan announced the move, now it's $189 48 hours later. $100 million for a podcaster is obscene, Spotify just made $4-$5 billion in valuation. Billion.

Joe walking away was most certainly a wake up call to YouTube and Apple. And Joe has set the market for top talent in an industry that I don't think had much transparency

There’s not a soul on this planet that wouldn’t take that deal. But here you are acting like being very successful and being rewarded for it is the wrong way to go about life.

I don’t know why this is downvoted. Joe Rogan is the sole podcast I’ve wished for years Spotify would have. It’s the easiest platform to listen imo and he has so much great content, why would I not want it on the easiest medium to use? I’m stoked for this personally
