This reminds me of that Chapelle show joke when the weather Channel interviewed JaRule after a hurricane.
Did that happen as well? I remember Chapelle joking about Ja Rule being interviewed after 9/11 . Who gives a frick what Ja Rule thinks in a time like this? WHERE IS JAAA? Or is that from the actual Chapelle show?
On the subject of JGL: I don't know what OT he was watching but I saw a whiny, brash, arrogant little shite in Luke. Who was simply there because Obi-Wan felt that the only way to redeem/bring back Anakin was using his son or daughter against him.
"I was going to go into Tashi to pick up some power converters"
"You bet I could, I'm not such a bad pilot myself"
"With the blast shield down I can't see a thing, how am I suppose to fight?"
"You don't believe in the force, do you?" After only truly starting to learn about it hours earlier
His impatience with Yoda. His inability to leave his weapons behind before venturing into the dark place after being told explicitly by Yoda that he wouldn't need them. Leaving Dagobah early and falling into Vader's trap. Allowing his anger/fear to consume him to the point that he used it to defeat Vader. Throwing down his damn lightsaber and letting the Emperor use force lightning on him.
The kid was an absolute turd. But he's all of a sudden going to try and kill his nephew because he felt a disturbance in the force. He's going to brush his shoulder off in the middle of a fight..um no.

If it was such a masterpiece, why do we need all of these people to explain just how great it was?

You're too unsophisticated and just can't see how finely made the Emperor's clothes are.

This.
JGL is describing what Luke could have been. Not the execution.
Maybe instead of the stupid side quest that took up an hour of screen with Finn and asian chick, and all the cutesy little bullshite between Luke and Rey on the island, they could have actually fleshed out the transformation in Luke. Instead, they completely ignored it so the movie could have its "OMG GASP" moment by revealing Luke tried to murder Kylo.
re: JGL defends TLJPosted by KirkLazarus on 1/18/18 at 1:22 pm to ShamelessPel
Family and friends are everything to Luke. EVERYTHING.
Wanting to get home to his aunt and uncle when he realizes stormtroopers are on the way, yelling out to Obi Wan when he is struck down by Vader, Leaving Dagobah to rescue his friends, rescuing Han, protecting Leia, refusing to strike his father down, "you're face in your friends is yours" (your weakness)
Its honestly Luke's weakness. He drops everything at his own personal risk for the ones he cares about.
I refuse to believe he would just kill someone in his family, sorry Rian, try again.

The movie lost whatever tiny string I was dangling from with this. I was done at this point.

They would have to show one hell of a lot of serious and credible character changes to make this acceptable to the audience. Luke's growth was a metaphorical growth from childhood (and childish behaviors) to that of an admirable adult in the first trilogy. As many have pointed out before he never stopped believing in and caring for his friends and family. He never stopped trying to see the good and then work to make it possible in (or for) the people about whom he cared the most.
I understand if a director would like to move Luke to a different type of character later in his life. I might even be open to the possibility of a Luke who did terrible things (fell into the dark path over many years) but it just didn't work for Luke to be weak and contemptible in the ways they chose to make him.
What could have broken him eventually? Something incredibly traumatic like the torture and death of his sister, his friends, and nearly all that he held dear. That's what you'd have to show to make a case for a Luke who turned his back on the path he previously chose.

Well he didn't. He goes into detail about how quick the urge passed and how he was wrong. It's part of the reason why he took himself out of the game. Fear of screwing up again. Fear of failure
Let's also remember he was right about Ren too

A New Old Skywalker
I don't think he defended the movie, he defended a character change in the movie. My issue with his argument about Luke's change was that he glossed over Rey. He says that a hero doesn't have to be flawless, in fact, it is boring yet Rey IS flawless. She picks everything up immediately. She is a boring character to lead the new generation. She has no way to grow unless she can blow up planets with her mind next movie and kill people from across the universe.
Kylo is the only interesting character in this series at the moment, literally the only one I have any interest in at all. Rey sucks, Poe sucks, Finn sucks, Vietnamese girl sucks. The plot sucks in the movie now that the resistance has been blown up.

You don't say?
I am pretty sure if I made a movie my boys would defend it for me too. Rian and him are friends.
Did you guys see Tuberville saying Coach O was the best hire in the country? Couldn't be because they are friends.

He is being furiously wasted.
I'd give just about anything for Lucas to help develop and Kasdan help write a prequel movie involving Luke and the Jedi Temple after RotJ and the rise of Kylo and the Knights of Ren with Snoke's backstory produced by Martin Scorsese and directed by Doug Liman.
frick it. Hopefully the people who made the Clone Wars animated series will just do it.

This sojourn definitely took up too much screen time. I would rather have watched Chewbacca eat those cute little island chickens.

JGL is not going to bash the director of Looper.
Rian Johnson also directed Brick, which was a key movie in JGL's turn from child actor to being taken seriously as an adult. Obviously he's not going to bash his friend's movie.
Also, I'm not sure why the opinion of an actor should hold such a lofty weighting. I could see that argument for a well respected writer or director, but not an actor who is close with the person he's defending.
