I think it's too late to hire him, he'd be too old to start a new run of films with him, but in no way would he be a reason it tanked. Elba is a fantastic actor and pretty much everybody likes him.

Bond doesn't need reinventing.
Just write the scripts as if Connery was still Bond, and find a suitable actor to play the part

Bond is dead to me. The great days of that franchise have been snuffed out by delusional writers and producers with an agenda to shove shite in our faces and tell us it's steak.
For the record, I didn't watch the last one, and won't watch future "Bond" movies.
It was a great run. Same goes for the Dr. Who franchise.

What they're doing is floating ideas so bad everyone becomes ok with making Idris Elba James Bond. They'll float ideas so bad we'll be begging to just make him black and call it a day.
