Is Saw the greatest horror franchise? What’s your favorite?
Friday, Nightmare & Halloween usually get top billing but even adjusting for “inflation” production values, acting & gore all lean Saw.

Re/make/boots of them have failed with the newest Halloween being the exception. Personally I’d go Freddy, but that’s mainly on the strength of the villain.

Conjuring & Final Destination have to be up there for many as well, but not for me.

ETA I’m defining franchise as 3 or more movies with the same identifiable villain/theme.

I like the conjurings. I will say though I went to the movies for the original Saw my freshman year at LSU (rave off O’Neal exit) and it blew my mind. It was legendary in its time.

The first Saw is one of the greats. The rest of the franchise is just silly.

If you include this in the horror category. then "Scream" would have to be included. I don't think either are horror though.

Original SAW was good all the rest were meh.

Freddy, Jason, Leather face, Alien, and Myers defined generations of horror fans. But yeah once they got off into the 7-X films they got really ridiculous. So where do you stop judging them because of the studios cash grabs? Do you knock Alien because of Prometheus? Or Friday the 13th because of Jason in Space?

Navi,

I agree with Scream being an “also receiving votes” but I’m confused on how you are defining “horror”.

What distinction are you making that separates Scream from Friday or Halloween?

Scream was more of a parody of Horry tropes. It was as much mystery as horror.

Final Destination I guess it's horror, but I guess i laughed too much to think of it that way.

I think horror has a lot of categories and a lot can get put in that box. Ghosts, Aliens, Zombies, Slasher, Supernatural, Witches, the occult, mummies, vampires, Demons, serial killers...I guess it's a pretty big tent that you could park just about anything under.

So i guess i will retract my statement on Final Destination just because i see it as more comedy than horror doesn't mean it won't belong there.

My personal favorite is the Rob Zombie trilogy.
House of 1000 Corpses
The Devils Rejects
3 from Hell

A strong second is the Hellraiser series, it’s shite after 3 though.

As far as the greatest I’d have to go with Nightmare. Saw falls off after the third one imo

how can you put The Conjuring in the same sentence as final destination? Final destination is bubble gum teenie bopper fast and furious horror. Now if you would have said Insidious, I could have taken you seriously.

Kracka,

Insidious is a fine franchise and for me ranks above the Conjuring universe. But it also falls into the “jump scare” craze of the 20teens.

I’ll give it this though. The

Spoiler alert

Red face jump scare in pt 1 is probably one of the greatest all time scares in the last 30 years. I’ll take insidious 1, & even sinister 1, over any particular FD movie.

However it’s the strength of the entire franchises that gives me Final Destination over those 2. Some of the kills in those FD movies are extremely “WTF?!”

Yeah but they were Rube Goldberg level deaths. They were so inconceivably ridiculous that they were funny and not scary.

I always loved Paranormal Activity movies. Made all the creaks and knocks houses make the most terrifying thing afterward.

I love the Saw series, but this is completely correct. When the first one came out, the whole thing was surprisingly well done and it made a LOT of money at the box offices. While I enjoyed a lot of the death scenes in the other ones, I still thought they were pretty ridiculous. As long as you go in without high expectations and enjoy the blood and gore, you'll enjoy it.

Marciano & everyone else who used this reply,

Isn’t that true for the other great horror franchises as well?

There are more bad movies than good movies in all them. Does Friday the 13th have anything going for it other than 2 good movies and campiness and nostalgia?

I don’t care for the Saw stuff; it’s too over the top for me. I’m not a big fan of the Conjuring stuff, either, Final Destination, or Paranormal Activity. Probably Nightmare on Elm Street/Friday the 13th would be my favorite franchise, even though they’re pretty cheesy.

The saw theme song that plays at the end of the films is so intense and great.

The others became silly yeah but Saw just became torture porn. Felt like they became more Hostel than horror attempts.
