There Will be Blood

Has to be top 5 easy greatest actors/actresses of all time. Its east to watch his characters and forget that he is just acting, and its not real.

The only others that I would put near him are Nicholson, Hanks, Peck, Henry Fonda, Brando, Bogart, and Hoffman

Hard to say he's the GOAT but he's up there. I'll also add that several of his films are snoozers.

I dont disagree with that, actually the movie I linked (TWBB), is a bit on the snoozy side and a bit overrated in some ways, but not because of DDL performance.

I've never seen a performance from him that wasn't exceptional.

As far as overall acting ability, he's in the discussion.

He is the first and only person to win the Oscar for Best Actor 3 times.

Not that the Academy Awards should be the standard, especially with their new racial quota rules, but when you consider how many great actors haven't won more than 1 Best Actor Awards, it's an impressive feat.

Personally, I think DDL could nail literally any role; up to and including Godzilla and the shark from Jaws.

When I first started my journey into the history of cinema about a decade ago, I remember My Left Foot being one of the movies I saw early on and that performance still stands with me today. I think its the most exceptional performance from an actor in movie history.

But, its not his best film, thats In The Name of The Father. The most underrated movie of the 90s. DDL shows off his greatness in the film, but Pete Postlethwaite demands attention in every scene his is in. A top 10 movie of the 90s.

I think it's in the realm of possibility, but any DeNiro performance under the collaboration with Scorsese compares favorably with any in history.

Don't get me wrong, he's really really good but I think he's become a bit overrated.

Part of what helped him seem to effortlessly disappear into his characters was he had no interest in being a celebrity.

If he had been running around being on magazine covers, doing tons of interviews, shooting ad campaigns etc etc etc it would have been a hell of a lot harder for him to pull off some of his parts b/c we'd all see DDL the celebrity playing a character instead of a character who is being played by DDL the actor.

I actually agree with this.

And to answer the OP's question/thread, DDL honestly has to be up there with one of the best to me. His performances in The Last of the Mohicans, My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father, Gangs of New York, There Will be Blood, and Lincoln are as good as any.

You've got a point but when you do see him in interviews he seems like such a chill and cool guy that it's almost more of a testament to his acting ability when you realize none of the characters he's ever played are anything like him

I’m shocked you didn’t include Gary Oldman. He is always in this conversation. I often see him ranked 1 or 2 along with DDL when mentioning today’s greatest actors.

Daniel Lewis was also powerful in Crucible. If you haven't seen that one, the parallels between the Salem Witch Trials and today's woke environment is eerie.

This thread inspired me. I have Netflix DVD and did a search. I have actually only seen three of his movies in which he was lead, Crucible, There Will Be Blood and Last of the Mohicans. Turns out he was in Ghandi and Mutiny in the Bounty as well in secondary roles. So I added Gangs of New York, Lincoln and Unbearable Lightness of Being to my list. But first I just started Season 4 of The Last Kingdom and have to finish it. Have to see what sort of escapades Utred, son of Utred, gets into and then out of...
