Why didn't anyone believe Cousin Eddy when he said that he'd been abducted by aliens? They're fighting aliens, but nobody believes that he was abducted by aliens. Do they not see the aliens?

IMO they saw the aliens.

Also, everyone believed him at the end. He was very brave.

Yes, this observation comes up from time to time.

I will submit that one of the most underrated minor scenes of all time (or just overlooked) is earlier in the film, when they interview the guy at the diner who fricks with Russell all the time.

They abused him...sexually

Yep, the military guys nudge each other like "this guy's nuts" while they're actively planning an attack on the aliens.

I like how they send all of their pilots against them instead of using missiles.

That has always irritated me also. And it seems apparent the "abductions" is what made him a drunk..

First pilot to second pilot. "Ha, look at this idiot that believes in aliens".

Second pilot : Yeah, He is an idiot. So let's go fight some aliens and give this guy a jet.

I'm pretty sure them not believing was an intentional move by the writers to throw in some levity based upon the very observation you are making.

It's that age old question asked of skeptics - would you believe in God even if He showed up. They'd all say yeah, but if He did, they'd still roll their eyes thinking THIS can't be the same God we were debating earlier.

Look at how the the religious responded to Jesus in the Gospels. He clearly met all the qualifications of their Messiah on paper. And yet...

He did not meet the traditional expectations of a messiah by any measure.

Because it's Randy Quaid?

Ancient Jews actually expected TWO Messiahs (in fact, they had several as it just means annointed one). In this case I am referring to the proper term. One a king and the other a suffering servant. Jesus met both of these standards during His time here.

The Kingly Messiah was expected to be a prophet like unto Moses (Deut 18:15)

1. He fed people miracle bread in the wilderness (manna)
2. He walked on water (water miracle passing through Red Sea)
3. Controlled the wind and waves (another Red Sea allusion)
4. He would be a great teacher of authority

Would be likened unto Elisha following Elijah:
1. Healed the sick
2. Raised the dead
3. Casted out Demons

Would be likened unto the Son of David
1. Enter Jerusalem of Donkey from the east as Solomon did
2. Be born in Bethlehem

Would Follow the Appearance of Elijah:
1. Followed John the Baptist lived, wore, preached, and ate the exact same things as Elijah. He also baptized in the exact locations of key moments in Elijah's ministry.
2. Even Jews TODAY liken John in that manner.

If you read the passion carefully you'll see the leaders KNEW Jesus was innocent and met these qualifications but that he was "bad for business" because he was removing the power from the current temple leaders who were making bank off the religious trade.

The Suffering Messiah was expected to echo Psalm 22 and Isaiah 53. And if you read those, this is pretty self explanatory.

Only later did Jews settle on the "one Messiah" model we hear today.

I could go on and on with this but suffice it to say Jesus clearly met their standard from a BIBLICAL basis. True, many expected Him to take up arms but many times, the real deal isn't what we entirely expect.

HENCE, my above comment related to the movie.

We can agree to disagree. We're not supposed to talk religion here.

Truth.

I think it's pretty natural for all the other characters to still laugh at Quaid. Even IF they now believe he was truthful about the anal probing, he's still a goofy drunkard. And frankly the aliens attacking don't seem like the type to want to anally probe Randy quaid anyway.

They expected a military commander who would rally the people to a military defeat of Rome, establishing a free Jewish state. Jesus had zero intention of doing so. "My kingdom is not of this world."

As I said - in the context of this thread what they EXPECTED (two Messiah's, not both merged into one) didn't match the obvious evidence before them which many chose to ignore. That's my whole point.

There was obvious evidence, given the current circumstance, that Quaid was abducted by aliens, but his story was not one anyone cared to believe for other reasons.
