Is this really the case? I've seen before that she was not white.
It is the American experience that has us messed up on this, Q. Most African Americans derive from West African stock. Like imagine Wesley Snipes' DNA results.
Because movies were made in America, we cast chicks like Elizabeth Taylor to play Cleopatra in the Golden Age.
Cleopatra, from an ethnic standpoint likely looked a lot like this:
There is zero evidence she looked anything like Adele James, particularly in features and other non-skintone ways.

I’m confused as to why people care. She was at least half African. It’s not some huge stretch to have her played by a black person.
She was born on the African continent but like Musk wasn’t black.

I personally don't even care that much-- I doubt I would have watched this even if Chris Pine played Cleopatra. But it's just another entry into the line of Hollywood making weird decisions that make for unpopular movies/TV then attacking people who point out the idiocy of their decisions and calling people bigots for their very reasonable observations.

Amazing how backwards the approach to entertainment is today.
They practically sneer at the audience. Used to be the intention was to please.

What did Cleopatra REALLY look like?
Interesting vid which looks at the historical data on what is known about Cleopatra.
( FF to the end and see her finished results. The animation is amazing. )

The thing that's particularly bad about this specific example of race swapping, is that this isn't meant to be a fictionalized historical movie or series.
This is being pushed as a documentary, which is absurd

half African for Egyptian rulers was usually closer to what we consider "white" today, genetically, than modern Egyptians
I’m well aware, Egyptian History was one of my studies in college, but my point is that it’s not crazy to assume a person of Egyptian descent is a little darker skinned than the average Greek.
The point being that it won’t have any bearing on this movie if an Egyptian princess/queen is dark skinned.

Not sure how that well said post by me is relevant to this, but thanks for reminding me how I make a lot of sense sometimes.

She was Greek, so probably more olive skinned. Definitely lighter in skin tone than most Egyptians of the time.

Ok. Wasn't planning on watching it anyway...because of the terrible casting for the lead.

Thats what people's been dowing.

Who ever that lady was in the clip talking about what her grandmother had told her...so what? It's not like granny knew Cleopatra herself. That was so damn pathetic.
She wasn't black. And she likely had red hair too. Not too many sub-Saharan Africans are sporting naturally red hair.
These Afro-centrists need to get off their high horses and start promoting ACTUAL African stuff instead of trying to appropriate other cultures and races.

are you assuming that Africans are monochromatic? Elon Musk and Omar Sharif would like a word...
Charlize Theron is literally an African-American

That's how you the filmmakers' intent is malicious. So many untapped stories to tell but they choose instead to direct all their resources just to slum by being racially provocative.

We’ll setting aside the fact that that post is you lamenting the outcomes of the people and policies you are stupid enough to vote for, it should mean that you’re in this thread talking about the absurdity of how clearly non-black historical figures have to be played by black actors now, or the hypocrisy that would undoubtedly come about if a non-black actor played a black historical figure.
But you’re you, another run of the mill stupid progressive. So it doesn’t. Instead you’re just in here wondering why people are talking about this.

That has literally never happened.
