I think Age of Ultron catches more flak than it deserves

IW spoilers

Having watched Phase 2 less than the other phases, I just completed a rewatch of the phase before I go see Inifinity War one last time in theaters. Although Ultron doesn’t live up to the hype (OML comin in hot) I think the rest of the movie gives a lot of great scenes and lines. I haven’t seen it in probably 2 years.

The party scene is really memorable, Cap slightly moving Mjolnir is great. Thor has really come into his own with Ragnorak and IW, but seeing him interact at the party with Stark and the WW2 vets is great.

Having Wakanda mentioned and bringing in Klau for the first time is great as well and leads into BP nicely.

Hawkeye is gonna be big in IW2 just judging from the lines he says with his wife “you think they don’t need me?” She says something like “I think they need you more than you know.” He’s gonna be big.

Showcases how powerful Scarlet Witch can be, she’s the most powerful behind Hulk and Thor in the group if you ask me. She lights up the group at the shipyard in this film and then she holds off Thanos with one hand while destroying the mind stone at the end of IW.

Also, between this and Winter Soldier, Widow continually has some of the coolest scenes. Her dropping out of the quinjet on her bike is fricking awesome.

Love that in the MCU Cap continually holds his own against foes that greatly outmatch him. He brings it against Ultron and then again against Thanos. His dialogue with Thor every movie is the best of the group.

TL:DR, AoU doesn’t deserve the hate it gets. Yes, Ultron falls short as a villain but the moments between each of the heroes is awesome. It does an outstanding job of setting up Phase 3. For Phase 2 I’d rank this one behind GoTG and Winter Soldier, but it’s miles better than Iron Man 3, Dark World, and Ant-Man.

My two gripes that IW takes away from this film: Shuri makes Banner look like a bitch when he’s an absolute genius. Him working together with Stark regarding JARVIS and Ultron is awesome. Vision gets shite on the entirety of IW when AoU builds him up to be the most amazing thing to ever happen to earth.

I think it’s really good. Not top tier but solid. I think people were expecting a little more out of Ultron as a character.

I didn't think it was terrible. I think it got panned by comic book fans because Ultron is supposed to be a menacing supervillain but was portrayed as a slapstick character.

It was a good movie, Ultron himself was just really disappointing as a villain, especially since it was an Avengers movie. He's nowhere close to Thanos or Loki.

AoE also did a good job developing characters that were before then pretty weak. Like Banner, Black Widow, Wanda and Clint.

I love this scene

I just wish Whedon had slipped in a line for Widow where she reveals her relationship w/Banner was really just a lie to try and keep him in control. She even says love is for children in Avengers 1 so it would work to have her admit it wasn't real.

Come on it’s a good scene. Falcon is introduced to the wider Avengers scene, Thor and Stark going back and forth about Potts and Jane, Thor sharing some Asgardian liquor, everybody trying to pick up Mjolnir....it’s good to see those interactions.

Vision handing Mjolnir to Thor is badass too.

I think the issue is Ultron turned out to be a lame villain. The trailers sold him as this evil badass, but he was just a jokester in the film.

That’s really when you boil it down my beef with the film. Yes there are good scenes in AoU and it’s not a complete disaster. I really liked everything at the farmhouse, Ultron’s introduction, and Ultron ripping Gollum’s arm off.

It’s just the trailers were completely misleading, and not in a good way. IW and BR2049 were as well, but they were trying to hide their cards and floor the audience. Disney just pussed out, likely thanks to MoS. This quote by Ultron in the trailer:

“I was designed to save the world. People will look to the sky and see hope... I’ll take that from them first.”

No one but 15 people know about Ultron when he enacts his doomsday plot, and no one would have any idea what was going on when he invoked the apocalypse. Ultron in the comics I do think is the most terrifying and disturbing villain. Here he’s simply a punching bag. Ultron at his peak should be able to reach similar levels to Heath Ledger’s Joker. They should have added in Pepper Potts to this as well to stand in for Janet van Dyne. Ultron is one of the greatest villains ever, and they fricked it up royally.

the story building and foreshadowing in Ultron was way better than I originally thought and didn’t pick up on a lot the first watch through.

only real gripe in the movie is Ultron. should have been way more menacing/genocidal-ish, but I understand it’s hard (kids, Disney, etc)

I don’t because of Thanos and to some extent the Vulture. They could have done it. I really think it’s as simple as overreacting to Man of Steel. Joss Whedon said he took the job of the original Avengers simply for the opportunity to bring Ultron to life (and the money obviously).

EDIT: Also Winter Soldier. That was dark as well.

oh definitely, I think they realized they could get away with it and some of the subsequent movies have been pretty dark.

I agree and I don’t want to turn this thread into a bash Ultron thread, but in addition to those things they should’ve given him his adamantium skeleton, he could’ve survived the tri-blast he received from Thor, Iron Man, and Vision.

I mainly just came away today thinking it’s a much better movie having seen Phase 3 now. It set up things going forward so well. Thor’s vision of the infinity stones, we even see the first signs of derision between Cap and Stark, how important Hawkeye is to the group, Scarlet Witch’s cleavage

Fake pic but still great

Yup. But Ultron was a big letdown.

Plus, it may be one of the more poignant MCU films even if the villain is a letdown. The whole Stark/Ultron relationship mixed with Vision's origin, Hawkeye's story and the growth of the Avengers...it all ties together nicely as a movie about family. People miss that, but it's there, and Whedon does it exceptionally well.

That shouldn’t have been hinted at, that should have been the core of this movie. Ultron should have killed millions, Captain reaches the point with Tony where he won’t forgive him, Ultron is stopped but decides to go into hiding just to let the Avengers to destroy themselves for him to return later (like Phase 4), and then Civil War is gloriously set up.

I like how it was a surprise villain. The first Avengers was evil alien robots, and then they figured screw it think anyone will realize we recycled the same bad guys from the first one?

Ultron was disappointing as a villain but the movie is where the avengers begin to crack, culminating in their complete dissolution in Civil War, which then leads into Infinity War where they are all separated and aren't really able to stand up to Thanos.
