If they continued the story they should have started with Rey as a padawan of Luke's new reformed jedi order and detail the struggles the NEW order must go through to bring peace to the galaxy knowing everything they know about Anakin's role.

Rey can still be the main character and everything, but a she would have a better chance at being a new unique character and not an Anakin Skywalker rehash without any struggles like she looks to be.

It would have been interesting if she had been but had her memory wiped Revan style to keep her safe on Jacku. Imagine she was left with someone to watch over her like Obi Wan did for look on Tatooine, but that someone was killed fairly early on.

Avatar the Last Airbender. I’m convinced that was JJ’s plan. Do what they did in Season 2

This is the easiest way to introduce totally new plotlines and characters. There is an entire Jedi archive sitting at Coruscant at the Jedi Temple. Luke really doesnt know anything about history of Jedi. New threats pop up for new characters. Luke goes to archive. Finds loose ends, old unresolved threats, and old unresolved plotlines. i.e. Asoka, anything really. New people have to deal with old problems. New plots tied to OT and prequels and KOTR.

The biggest open end was the origins of the Emperor and Plagues. The Plagues book was phenomenal and figuring that whole thing out related to new threat of Ren would have been good. Trying to finish what the Emperor and not Vader started is what Ren should be doing and figuring out what that was could have kept Rey and Luke very busy.

Last post on this sorry. The ultimate end game Lucas seemed to be setting up with Plagues Sith force zombies vs Yoda/Ben Jedi force ghosts. Maybe they are still heading that way with Lukes TLJ ending. But that could open up an interesting way to mix old and new. There is no way the book is closed on the Vader character. Still many of millions on the table to make with that guy.

Agree 100%

Force Awakens felt like a Star Wars movie. It had callbacks, brought old characters back, was driven by new characters, and created intrigue into where the trilogy would go. It was a great setup film for the next two.

Rian just completely dropped the ball and got away from so much of the potential TFA setup for him which was unnecessary. I hope Abrams can course correct and put out a decent Episode IX but so much of that initial intrigue is gone now due to poor decisions in VIII.

Here is the problem though, the real question of how the New Star Wars movies should have isn't what plot points should have been done differently. There is a million different ways you could have done that and pulled it off.

Its the people behind the scenes that put the franchise in trouble.

JJ Abrams is a good director and a great idea guy. His problem, and its been on display throughout his career, is his follow up. He's the guy you might want directing the first movie, even writing it with some guidance, but not the guy you want to guide the entire trilogy to a successful conclusion. It just isn't what he does.

Kathleen Kennedy is a tremendous producer. I know, people are going to riot over that, but she is. Her list of big movies she produced is astonishing. If I need a big time producer to drag a movie to the finish line then I'll take her any time.

She was an amazing producer... and is a bad overall head of a major production company like Lucasfilm. Kennedy, like Abrams, hasn't shown the ability to plan and carry out a series of movies, or, in this case, an interlocked universe of movies. She is one of the best in Hollywood history at the small picture, what do we need to do to get this movie in the can? But the big picture, where do we go from here after the movie is finished, isn't her thing.

So the plot twists and characters and all that... wouldn't matter. There was no clear vision for the arc of the trilogy, or for the future of the Star Wars Universe for that matter, and it was going to go off the rails sooner or later.

It just happened to be sooner and in a truly epic clusterfrick sort of way.

was and still am fine with Rey not being special or related in any way to an OT character.

That makes no sense. Here’s what I had hoped:

Han and Leia marry. Have Ben. Ben is trained by Uncle Luke as a padawan at his Jedi Academy but has a hard time mastering his powers even basically and is prone to fits of anger especially given his legacy. Meanwhile Han and Leia have Rey. Rey is instantly powerful in the force, further provoking Bens jealousy. Ben falls and leaves the academy. Han and Luke have a falling out as Han blames him for his son and he leaves his family as Leia is determined to not cast out her child. First Order arises, and Kylo comes back for the massacre at the academy. Luke and leia send Rey to Jakku in hiding as they both now sense the Dark Side has regained footing in the galaxy.

You can fill in whatever backstory you want on Snoke. Darth Maul, The resurrected Plageius, Palpatine reborn, doesn’t matter.

And the conflict between brother and sister would be something you could expand upon. In the books Luke embraces the concept of the Unifying Force, master of both light and dark.

It was set up for Rey to be a Skywalker. Jaina Solo is a freakin awesome character in the EU (Lukes Niece) having the force control of her lineage from her mother and the brashness of her father. Just do that.

Source material that would be awesome:
Old republic
Thrawn

Or

If you wanted to do a same characters movie, you make Leia the head of the new republic and you do a movie showing Kylo and the knights of Ren as a small but formidable evil rebellion making progress after destroying Luke's temple. The Jedi are gone and the sith are gone after Return of the Jedi. Luke was training Kylo and a new crop of Jedi and they turned to evil. Go from there.

I just don't subscribe to the whole idea that she has to be related to a Solo or a Skywalker for it to be a good movie. It seems lazy and boring to me.

And it's clearly not the problem with TLJ if she isn't. It's everything else about her character that's gone off the rails. Make her related right now and her character is still terrible.

But this all depends on if you think Star Wars is essentially about this particular family or bigger than that. But if you were going to make 10 more movies or whatever, you can't keep making people cousins and nephews or whatever else.

Real simple. They should have cast new people to play the roles and they should have gone with the Zahn novels.
