I just saw the hobbit today and havnt read the book in a few years. Where did some of the content come from such as the necromancer and the pale orc? I don't remember that from the book. Were those from other novels or just made up?

I know that Gandolf talked about trying to save Thorin's father from a Necromancer. He had lost his wits and only remembered to give him the map and key. Gandolf said he barely made it out and Thorin wanted to make the Necromancer next after Smaug.

I guess my next question would be how you felt about the extra content? Personally I enjoyed it but I'm not strict about sticking with the original.

I'm actually just starting to read the book. That's why I was able to answer his question. I just got done with Bilbo's escape from Gollum. So I guess I don't have an opinion either way yet. I do see where extra content was needed to make three, three hour movies. The book goes by pretty quickly.

I would have been disappointed if they didn't add this stuff. I've always been interested in the necromancer aka sauron since I've read the books and very intrigued by the appendices with his story.

It gives the hobbit movie even more life because you think Smaug is the only legitimate threat which technically he is in the book but the movie gets to expand on that and show what gandalf is doing while he is away so long. There is a bigger power in the shadows during all this which is the necromancer.

Better than Bain's death.

Smaug >>>> Bain. Smaug is one of the most anticipated bad guys on a movie screen in some time.

uhhh Bain is a flesh and blood human that got killed with a cannon shot. smaug is a fricking dragon with skin made of armor and got killed with an arrow.

How is that weak? He got shot in the chest by a cannon.

As for smaug, he had gotten lazy over the years and didnt tend to his armor like he should. He thought he was invincible, like the dwarves, which led to his downfall, just like theirs.

Honestly, this is a change they have to make. You know that Jackson and company spent a long time figuring out how to kill off Smaug. I mean Bilbo tells a bird about Smaug's weak point. They have to do something different.

If they do it they will add to this rather than replace it. Like the troll scene where gandalf splits the rock to reveal the sun after delaying them with talk of how to cook them, making the scene more dramatic for film.

This. PJ mentioned that Smaug was something he worked really hard on and was the vocal point of the movie and he wouldn't let anyone down. I'm sure they have spent many sleepless nights thinking about ways to kill him.

How Smaug dies in the book, and the events leading to it, should be treated as gospel. If PJ wants to add to it in terms of detail, that's fine. However, if Smaug is dispatched in any fashion different from the book, I will be supremely pissed off.
