Why was the master going to poison Asriel?

He didnt want to support Asriels journey to the north. Considers him more of a danger than it being a beneficial research trip/journey to find out about "dust". He thinks his research goes against the religious doctrine that they practice at Jordan.

Was Lyra really safe in Oxford?

I would say no.

quote:

Who are the Gobblers?

They are basically the group of people that are snatching up or "gobbling" these kids. That's probably all you want to know right now, anything else would be some pretty decent spoilers

quote:

Is the Magisterium the religion or the gov't or both?

They work on behalf of the church and kind of watch out for scientific discoveries that might go against what the church teaches. So they dont like the whole Asriel going to search for this city in the sky type place he thinks he's found.

I agree, I put the book down (in the garbage can). It's a direct attack on Christianity.

re: HIS DARK MATERIALS Season Long Thread - S1 Ep5: "The Lost Boy"
So... the Dark Materials is specifically sit in an alternate history from ours (one in which John Calvin became a Pope instead of a leading figure of the protestant reformation).

In that world (from the books):
“The Papacy itself had been abolished after Calvin’s death, and a tangle of courts, colleges, and councils, collectively known as the Magisterium, had grown up in its place. These agencies were not always united; sometimes a bitter rivalry grew up between them. For a large part of the previous century, the most powerful had been the College of Bishops, but in recent years the Constitorial Court of Discipline had taken its place as the most active and feared of all the Church’s bodies.”

I liked it, though it contained the biggest deviation from the books so far.

Definitely. When he walked through into another timeline I was ok well there's book 2 I was surprised they added that so early.

Im guessing now by the second season it will barely be recognizable to the second book.

While crossing over was book two it seems that they can flesh out better being introduced so early. When you learn of it in book two it is evident this isn’t something new that the magisterium has discovered but rather a long known thing being kept under wraps

Episode 3- The Spies

From the clutches of the Gobblers, Lyra finds help from an unlikely source, which helps her piece together more about her past and keep safe from the Magisterium.

Ep. 2 questions:
1. So your Daemon can attack others? Must suck to be the guy with the bug.
2. Did the Master give the compass to Lyra to give to Asriel? Why didn't he give it to him himself?

Can anyone else hear what your daemon says ? Or is that “ private” conversation

I was super lost after episode 1... rewatched it and felt much better after it .
Now after episode 2, I’m in. I really liked it

Just watched episode 2 and I found myself checking to see how much time was left the whole time, idk it just hasn’t really grabbed me. Actually finding it kinda boring. Will probably stick with it for a few more

Daemons speak out loud but often only in private. What usually happens in the novels is that Pan changes into a mouse or other small animal when be wants to speak privately to Lyra.

I think by episode 3, most of the audience will have caught on, but the important key to understanding the logistics of Lyra's world is that it is controlled by a super-authoritarian religious organization (modeled after the RCC) called the Magisterium. This group is staffed and run by a combination of "true believer" religious officials and sadistic, power-seeking beaurocrats.

The main plot of the first novel is a direct parallel to the RCC pedophilia scandal and the worrying marriage of government beaurocracy and scientific research.

Yep. In the book, Lyras is a moth for the majority of it. Her daemon hasn't settled yet but I never got why someone would want to settle as a bug.

He knows Lyras special. She thinks she is getting it to give to Asriel but the master knew she would be the one to use it. There are only like 5-6 in existence I think. And pretty much nobody alive knows how to use it good.

Episode two was a bit slow but I think that episode just kind of showed Mrs Coulter isnt who you thought she was.

But yes, in addition to what was already said, they can hear the other person's daemon talk. But daemons rarely talk to their human when other humans are around and very rarely talk to other humans other than their own. If that makes sense.

Humans don't choose their daemon's form, it is a reflection of their true nature. Daemons are an external manifestation of your spirit/soul.

From last episode: "Many people would like their daemon to be a lion, then receive a poodle."

Insects are industrious, hardy, communal, diminutive, etc. You'll note that most members of the Magisterium have insects, reptiles, and amphibians as daemons, pointing to their cold, alien nature and lack of empathy. Servants often have dogs, etc.

Ok that answered my other question of why the moth was in her room and her daemon kept changing when attacked. Then other world is our world right? Great first two episodes. Looks like they spent a lot of money. Bring on the polar bears.
