Rewatching for the first time in a long time. This was me and my dad’s show when I was in high school. The first season is an absolute masterpiece.

The acting, the writing, the production - all elite.

The second season was great too, but felt rushed towards the end of due to the show getting cancelled.

I doubt HBO/AT&T would ever bring this back, but man, what a series.

Supposedly they wanted them to wrap it up because it was getting super expensive. Rome was the trial run for a show like game of thrones. Honestly they could have got maybe 2 more seasons out of it, but the main historical moments were shown up to Augustus.

I still love it.
Lucius and Titus Pullo are fantastic characters caught up in all of political and historical events.

Also, because I'm super mature, lots of bewbs and violence are a sure winner.

This is one I’ve thought about watching several times before. Even though it’s rushed, is there a solid finish/conclusion to the story, or is it too open ended?

I’ve heard good things about it many times before. And I’ve enjoyed other HBO series that were seemingly cut short (like Carnivale and Deadwood).

I rewatched it 2-3 years ago, and the supposed expensive production costs were hard to identify.

Most scenes occurred in a handful of indoor sets. Many outdoor scenes of Rome were limited to alleyways. I don’t remember any scenes of sweeping and epic battles.

They did a good job of alluding to the grandeur of Rome and the power or the various armies, but very rarely did they ever show it on screen.

The scenes in Egypt in the second season were very similar. Most scenes were shot on a couple of indoor sets.

1st season is good drama.
Second season is super rushed , but still interesting.

It helps that it's very well cast.
Pretty much all of the main players you will recognize from newer stuff.

It moves with action much faster than deadwood. And Marc Antony is pretty great but not quite swearingen.

The first season fantastic. I watched it all for the first time when I had the Wuhan virus in December.

Was a great show to binge.

Definitely watch it. The first season is superb. And yeah, the second is rushed. They kind of just hit the highlights. But, for me, it didn't ruin it like the ending of GoT did.

I've said this before, but the early scene showing the clocklike precision of the Roman legion in battle is one of my favorite battle scenes ever.

And like someone mentioned above, the characters of Pullo and Lucius were awesome. Such a great compliment and contrast pair.

I believe the show's creator had a five season arc envisioned. Season two was supposed to end with the break up of the Second Triumvirate with the third season focusing on the fight between Octavius and Marc Antony. The fourth season was supposed to show Augustus's reign while the fifth and final season was to explore Augustus's final years as well as the birth of Christianity in Palestine.

I thought it was a planned 4 season series, however the above was supposed to be the final for sure.

I am actually about to wrap up season 2, started a re-watch a couple weeks ago. Have not seen it since original airing.

Season 1 was really, really good. I remember season 2 being a mess and yup it is a dang mess.

Honestly it begins to unravel when they changed the actor for Octavian in season 2. Original Octavian (Max Pirkis) was just a better actor for that role. I am not sure I could have watched a season 3,4 and 5 with Simon Woods playing Augustus. Besides being a downgrade in actors, they aged Octavian too early. If they were going to do a 4 or 5 season series, the character would need to be swapped and aged. That break should of came at the end of season 2 though for a 4 season run or middle to end of season 3 for a 5 season run.

Vorenus and Pullo are a dang near perfect combo though.

Loved S1 of this show. I remember rushing to Wikipedia after the season finale just to get a reminder as to what happened after Julius Caesar's assassination.

I loved it.. Wished they wouldn’t have rushed the end. I liked the young Octavian.

I recently watched it a few months ago for the first time. It was really good. The only thing lacking like another poster mentioned were the big battle scenes (ie most of the greatness from GoT)

They would show that a huge battle was about to take place, then do some editing of guys fighting, almost like a history channel type montage thing, and then show them cleaning up the battlefield afterwards. I do think they said the reason the show was so expensive to make was because they were filming in a lot of remote locations overseas and moving the production all over Europe.

For anyone interested, History Buffs on Youtube does a great job of breaking down the accuracies and inaccuracies of the show.

The beheading of Pompey was nuts, did not expect that. What was even cooler was googling it and seeing all the ancient paintings depicting it. Super interesting stuff.

The set burned at one point during production. That apparently was one of the reasons the serie was cancelled. The cost to rebuild was prohibitive.
