A Harry Potter live-action TV series is in early development at HBO Max. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that executives at the WarnerMedia-backed streamer have engaged in multiple conversations with potential writers exploring various ideas that would bring the beloved property to television. Sources say broad ideas have been discussed as part of the early-stage exploratory meetings.
While it's news that executives at HBO Max and Warners are engaged in meetings to find a writer and pitch for a Harry Potter TV series, no writers or talent are currently attached as the conversations are still in the extremely early stages and no deals have been made. "There are no Harry Potter series in development at the studio or on the streaming platform," HBO Max and Warner Bros. reaffirmed in a statement to THR.

I've always thought they would eventually do a full on reboot, with the ability to adapt the books, especially the longer ones, a bit more faithfully.

It'll happen eventually.

Are they going to age them up to college-aged?

You know those premium channels like to include nudity.

Though, HBO did do "His Dark Materials."

Called it. Said last year by the end of 2021 they would announce this. HBO has to compete with its competitors somehow, and no one gives a damn about Game of Thrones anymore.

Pretty sure they’ll make each book a season. I think they’ll add a lot of filler in the first 3 books but be a bit more faithful to the books with the later 4.

I'll be excited if they do an actual faithful remake of the books.

They can frick right off if this is some "original" set at an American wizarding school, or Durmstrang or something.

Crossing my fingers

I have a bad feeling they may try something stupid and ruin the series

No way Rowling allows this. She controls everything HP. It would be more like His Dark Materials if anything which I enjoy.

I think a series that follows the Marauders story line could be really good.

They’ll frick it up. With the way Fantastic Beasts has gone and the significant shift in society since the writing, just leave it alone.

I want more, but not more that’s fricked up.

Which I did say in my original post.

They did make a good Harry Potter bit back on SNL years ago. Hermoine came back after a growth spurt and all the guys acted differently towards her.

That’ll never happen. They’ll find ways to SJW it up.

Hopefully some of these trends we see in other areas can carry over to IP like this. The worlds of Star Wars, Marvel, Harry Potter, LOTR, GOT, etc. all have incredible potential for branching and new character development, maybe with sprinkles of the originals. If done well (see Mandalorian) then these worlds could be explored in depth with ORIGINAL content in an exisiting and beloved world. Major $$$ to be made.

Wizarding world doesn’t all have to be about HP, Star Wars doesn’t all have to revolve around Skywalkers, Marvel around the Avengers. There’s so much rich opportunity within these worlds and others, just gotta have the right minds at work.

A full on reboot with each book being a ten episode series could be great. The movies are so focused on streamlined plot. There’s so much world building and character moments in the direct pages of the book that got cut in the movies, plus the myriad possibilities for stuff that’s hinted at or just mentioned to be fleshed out.

You could also do a ton of prequel work. A marauders/First Wizarding War series being the most obvious. A Founders series also has potential. Then there’s the opportunity for “sequel” material, I.e., stuff set in between the end of Book 7 and the epilogue. But that’s dicier, with a higher potential to frick up canon and delegitimize the original series, a la the new Star Wars trilogy.

TLDR: a tv reboot of the original series or a prequel series would have me very intrigued; anything post original series would have me worried.

If they did a remake of the books, they shouldn't do 10 episode seasons for books 1 and 2. There's just not enough there.

Do limited series 4 part shows for books 1 and 2 filmed back to back, release them a few months a part.

Then start doing a book a season.
