Currently showing on SYFY. I was just getting into my teenage years when these movies were coming out, and man I still love them to this day. I feel like this movie series is slightly under appreciated when speaking about the great movie series of all time. The books are beautifully portrayed through stunning CGI and set pieces, and the acting is top notch from multiple characters throughout the movies.

It's always cool when you can grow up with a cast of characters. I certainly did with Harry/Ron/Hermione and I'll always enjoy these films when I watch them.

I still remember how pissed off I was as a teen when Goblet of Fire skipped the World Quidditch match. I was hyped for that moment and then it cut straight from the coin flip to postgame.

Now I see that there was really no need for it and had to be cut, but still

As a huge fan of the books, the movies are pretty terrible. Plot choices, casting, acting, writing are all almost entirely bad.

Starting with the fourth book, lots had to be cut from the films. They were getting long and cumbersome. They hadn’t even started the first task yet in the fourth book on the same page where the first book ended... if that makes sense.

If you read the books first, 1 and 2 were mostly loyal to the full stories. Things started to get shaky with book 3 when they tried but couldn’t really cram everything in to give you a real connection with Lupin or Black or Snapes hatred of both which was a vital plot point for the series. Everything seemed to happen too quickly to feel important in the third movie.

Harry Potter took a turn for the best when Azkaban came out. I remember as a kid thinking “holy shite they are dressing like us now!” They stopped the whole boarding school/robe look.

It’s still my favorite of the series.

GoF is one of my least favorite Harry Potter films for one reason: in the first scene they ruin the mystery. From that point forward you know what is going on while your mouth was on the floor in the books when the twist is revealed. You know it from the start in the movie though.

I remember being disappointed by the choice to switch from robes at the time, as I always felt that kind of took away some of the magic.

It’s another thing that I’ve grown to care less about over time

The casting was pretty horrible too. Both Barty Crouch Sr and Jr came across as weak and dumb. Krum was terrible and completely unbelievable.

Yeah I really never understood why they reveled it was Barty Crouch Jr at the start like that. It's not like they used David Tennant to really do anything important in those scenes so it can't be argued it aided the way they told the story. Doing that also made Barty Crouch Sr sympathetic from the start rather than having us think he was a ruthless a-hole all during the movie.

They wanted it to be easy for the audience to figure it out. There wasn’t enough time to explain who Barty Crouch Jr was and they felt like they needed more than just the courtroom scene. Even that wasn’t really enough to truly explain his situation from his relationship with his dad to how he escaped prison. It was for people who hadn’t read the books.

It should have been a series on HBO, Amazon Prime or something.

Was Amazon Prime even a thing when the movies started coming out?

I have no doubt that the HP series will be remade at some point in the far future.

Kinda rare too. Must be a short list of characters fall into that category.

Would it have really been that confusing though? Just have the scene at the Quidditch World Cup where Harry meets Crouch Sr and have somebody tell him that Crouch sent his own son to Azkaban. That plus the scene with the pensieve should have been enough for everyone to understand.

There were many things omitted in the movies that I would think made it hard for non readers to fully understand what was going on.

Watched the movies then read all of the books, enjoyed them both immensely.

The 3rd movie is the best. Just enough mix of the playful energy from the first 2 and the darker tones from the later movies.

It is awesome they got Alfonso Cuaron to direct it.
