So I finally got around to seeing this and... oh my God is it awesome. Now, it works as a straight horror film, and it has some seriously tense scenes as the band tries to fight their way out of the green room against a club full of Nazis.

But what made the film work is that everybody, even the villains, make sense as people. and even when people have a bad idea (which is frequent, given that the theme of the film is people trying to do things they have literally no talent or experience in), it seemed organic and at least logical.

In a film in which the villains are a bunch of Nazis, it's really interesting to see them all be well-rounded and some of them even empathetic. Gabe, the Nazi who runs the till and cleans up misses, is the most put upon and relatable character in the film. He's not a good guy per se (he is a neo Nazi after all), but he's also not portrayed as a bad guy. He just has a wish to belong, even if it means being on the lowest rung of the ladder.

Great movie. And people get hacked up with machetes. That's cool, too.

This makes the entire film work. And I don't know why artists aren't focusing on real characters with real autonomy (hello my recent post in the Suicide Squad thread).

Characters aren't story props, they are characters.

Love this movie, and I love what it added to horror this year since it was such a different take.

Green Room was probably my favorite movie of 2016. Fantastic, engrossing story and Jeremy Saulnier has incredible talent for somehow making brutal violence very tasteful. I've loved all of Saulnier's films so far, and can't wait for his next one.

This is one I've been wanting to watch. I didn't find it on NF. Any ideas on where I can watch it?

It's showing on demand on Time Warner Cable. I got it on Blu Ray. But go find a copy, it's worth it.

Amazon is doing like .99 cent rentals until the end of January. Plus I think it's on HBOGo. Could be wrong though.

I thought I searched it on HBOgo over the weekend, but I may not have. I'll try to check again this evening.

I also like that the Nazis aren't invincible. This is overwhelming odds, but it's not impossible odds. And the band suddenly doesn't become a bunch of superheros. They feel every cut and break. You can see each side scheming against the other one, and why they do what they do.

No one does anything just for the sake of moving the plot along.

Bingo.

The way the tension built, you could feel it on both sides. Usually, the drama from a story is going to come from anxiety of watching the protagonist encounter obstacles. Since the viewer honestly should have no idea how this ends, the tension is almost equalized, and every single action is built to continue amping that up across the board.

I think the brutality, and the real and visible consequences, continuously squashes any idea of this working itself out easily for anyone involved.
