If you had to choose one?
People shite on 3, but I still loved it. BUT, it doesnt come close to 1 or 2.
Id have to take 1 personally. Marlon Brando was legendary in 1, but Pacino and De Niro were awesome in 2.

I absolutely love The Godfather Part II, but the character arc of Michael Corleone in The Godfather puts it over the top for me. It's close, but the original wins this battle.

1.
Hands down.
That being said, for me, The Godfather is the greatest movie ever made. It’s top on my list, perfection. The Godfather, Part II is one of the greatest movies ever made and somewhere around 15-20 on my list.
So both are great but 1 is the GOAT.

If 2 was the DeNiro arc as a stand alone move that would be it.

Both?? If I absolutely had to choose one or the other, 1.
A while back they released a box set of both movies cut into chronological order, so technically that would be one 7 hour movie. Would that be cheating?

They're kind of impossible to separate for me. They feel like one long movie and seamless story.

I was blown away by the original "Godfather" and when they announced a sequel, I figured they were just cashing in on the fame of the first.
However, it was exceptionally good but the only thing that got me was the frequent flashbacks throughout the movie. That had me watching it a few times to catch things I missed.
A few years ago the re-edited the movie, added some cut scenes and put it in sequential mode and I found it to be a very good idea and made the movie flow a bit better.
Too hard for me to pick either over the other though as both are equally good.

2 for me, I think it’s the greatest movie of all time

1.
2 may be the technical better movie, but given the subject matter where you’re led to pull for actual villains, there’s something more enjoyable about seeing the family/machine work right and thrive.
It’s not as fun in 2 where you’re forced to acknowledge that they’re all bad guys.

I love 2, and would vote 2.
But I'm a back-story kind of person.
All of the actors were spectacular in the movie ... Pacino, DeNiro, Caan ... even the woman that played the mother.

Agreed.

Also agreed. As great as the 2nd one is, the 1st one is one of the first rated R movies I've ever seen. I always had a connection to that one.

Definitely 1. It would have been amazing to have experienced it when it came out. There are a lot of deleted scenes from one and two on youtube, many that would have worked perfect in the final cut. I think those might be in The Godfather Saga (the 7 hour one mentioned above) may have the deleted scenes included in it.

I don’t distinguish. To me they are one long movie.

I was 11 when it premiered in the theaters and my father insisted that I see it. Back then you had people still insisting that there was no mafia. He wanted me to see there was real evil in the world.
I thought it was great, but at 11 the greatest part (parts) was Apollonia’s tits.
