George R.R. Martin: Pressure of global fame from TV show prevented me from writing faster

In a rare interview with the Observer which will be published on Sunday, Martin said that the TV show had not been “very good” for him, admitting that its end in May had been “freeing”. He still has two more novels of the fantasy saga to write, but insisted their endings would be unaffected by the controversy over the show’s ending.
“No, it doesn’t. It doesn’t change anything at all … You can’t please everybody, so you’ve got to please yourself,” he said.
With the combined success of his books and the show across the world, Martin, 70, is estimated to be worth $65m (£54m). But, he said, his increasing fame had made writing difficult.
“I don’t think [the TV series] was very good for me,” he said. “The very thing that should have speeded me up actually slowed me down. Every day I sat down to write and even if I had a good day … I’d feel terrible because I’d be thinking: ‘My God, I have to finish the book. I’ve only written four pages when I should have written 40.’”
Martin said he would “let fans have their theories” but that he now steered clear of the intense emotional response the show provoked online.
“I took myself out of all that ... some of [the theories] are right and some of [the theories] are wrong. They’ll find out when I finish,” he said.
When asked if he missed the early days, the author was clear: “Yeah. Honestly I do. I mean, I can’t go into a bookstore any more, and that used to be my favourite thing to do in the world. To go in and wander from stack to stack, take down some books, read a little, leave with a big stack of things I’d never heard of when I came in. Now when I go to a bookstore, I get recognised within 10 minutes and there’s a crowd around me. So you gain a lot but you also lose things.”

Well, book 4 sucked. And I never got through book 5. So it might be for the best for us to forget this IP

I thought he was going to say he's been busy nailing all that hot convention nerd chach.

The show didn’t start until April 2011. He already had a 6 year gap between Feast (2005) and Dance (2011) when the show was released. And a 5 year gap between Storm (2000) and Feast.
Sorry GRRM, your arse was slow before the show. Don’t blame this on it.

Yep. I started reading these books in high school. I actually forgot all about the series until the trailers for the show started popping up. Did the show contribute to the delay? Why not, but it doesn't cover all of the reasons.

The guy became a super millionaire in his 60s. Writing, yes, was probably always a love, but once the convention circuit began and he became famous, he started earning extremely easy and huge sums of money.
He didnt have to write anymore... A task that he probably enjoyed, but is pretty taxing creatively and he had to do it to stay afloat financially. Those conventions and appearances, he just shows up and gets a nice check. I mean, damn, I'd probably abandon the books too.
Plus his books are not something you can just pump out like so many of these other authors can that get famous.
Charlaine Harris (the creator and writer of the True Blood books) spent much of her adult life in my hometown. She raised her kids there. Begor she hit big, she published series after series for 20+ yrs.
Her books though, unlike Martin's are pretty formulaic. She once told a guy I know that once the first book was written, she could write sequel books in a week because she had a program that helped her and each entry in the series (especially mystery) is so laid out in the same narrative template every time.
Martin has no formula. He's not writing just an episode in the life of type of shite, he's got to come up with so much in every book.
He's old and he's rich. And yes, now that the show is over and they pissed off so many of the fans, he won't be nearly as in demand. I bet the final two books possibly never see the light of day.

In other words, he's writing literature, not john Graham or Patricia Cornell formula crap.
How long did it take Tennyson to write In Memorium?

I agree. I don't think he'll finish it either.

Everyone likes to give him shite. Put yourself in his shoes.
You hit the jackpot on an HBO series, and you have a 50/50 shot at disappointing from here.
I'm buying a beach house in Key West with a boat and laughing at you losers.
Go ahead and down vote, but put yourself in his position and age.
If I were him I would be perfectly content slapping any upset fan across the face with a Ten thousand dollar bundle of hundreds.

After the way the show ended I really don't care if he ever finishes it anymore

I’ve legitimately tried to be understanding. I think most recognize it takes time to produce good works. But he’s been an absolute dick about anyone even questioning some of the BS he throws out there about not writing faster.
Blaming the show for “slowing him down” is a perfect example. His writing process was slowing down well before the show. Why? Because everyone who’s read the books knows he’s written himself into a corner with some storylines. If anything, the show gave him some cushion and assistance to address some of those issues. He also admittedly doesn’t write anywhere but home. So his writing process itself automatically sets things up to where it’s going to take more time if he’s traveling for the show. That’s on him, not the popularity of the show.
People are just tired of him blaming everyone else for not finishing the books. It’s on him at this point. Regularly shitting on the fans of his series doesn’t do him any favors and he’s done that for a long time.

Now that the show is over, i don’t care about the books anymore. And I’m sure most people are probably the same.

Yeah, it would’ve been redeemable had he said something along the line that he was disappointed with the shows ending. He would’ve gotten support and sympathy from fans. But instead we get the “you can’t please everybody” line.

Feast for Crows is incredible, and DwD is almost as good.

Blah blah blah
Translation:
I was pissed people figured out the surprise so early and lost interest.

I down-voted the house in Key West.
If I’m worth $65mil, I ain’t buying a house in Florida.

I’m going to buy Winds. If Spring ever does drop I’m waiting to hear if Bran sits on the IT. If so, I’ll skip it just like I skipped the series finale.
