I think he spends so much time thinking about what kind of food combinations to go on a tangent about when writing...and that's why it takes 5 years/book.

He's actually used the D&E stories as a major info dump for the main series. Hopefully, not having to find ways to work the backstory into the main narrative will streamline the process but we'll see.

Doubt it. Martin has already told Beinoff and Weiss who ends up on the Iron Throne at the end of the series so they know what general direction to take the show without having the books as source material or taking any further advice/direction from Martin.
I'm definitely taking "lay the tracks" as fleshing out an outline for HBO to move forward if necessary.
