Tonight features Classic 1970s films about dystopian near or distant futures

Just finished The Omega Man ...

On now:

Logan's Run ...then

THX-1138

A Clockwork Orange

Soylent Green
...

Don't think I've seen Soylent Green since Joe Bob Briggs and Monster Vision

Caught much of the Omega Man for the first time, and starting Logan's Run from the beginning

Amazing to watch these to see just how much other movies ripped them off.

I could not believe that Logan's Run came after 78. I thought it was one of the earlier films...

That is what blew me away. I remember seeing this on TV as a kid in the 80's and thinking then that the miniatures looked incredibly fake, considering Star Wars came out a year or so later. I am surprised Logan's Run hasn't been remade. The story and action was pretty good.

Mankiewicz said after Logans Run aired last night that a remake has been in the works for years, but the project keeps stumbling. He also said, and I think most if not all would agree, that seeing a remake would be very enjoyable and something to look forward to.

Watching the original isn't pretty incredible though...Ben said it was largest budget sci if movie ever made in 1976 with a $9 million budget. Incredible to think that just a year later, Lucas comes along with probably a fifth of that budget and blows Logans Run out of the water in every single aspect. Logans a Run felt like it was made in 1968 not 1976....where the hell did all that money go to??

I also caught some of THX-1138 ...which is horrendous by the way.well except for the action and sci-fi sequences, those look 20 yrs ahead of 1971....but ....you can really see the beginnings of Star Wars in that movie. The story is atrocious, but the droids, the technology, and the directing is all quite similar.

Amazingly, if you take Lucas's first 2 films and blend them you really get the essence of Star Wars. The characters and storytelling and fun from American Graffitti and mix it with the technology and feel of THX-1138. Lucas really truly was an artistic visionary and genius, and his films from the 1970s show that. He was kind of a blend o Kubrick and Spielberg...He just became too consumed with selling shite later and making films for 8 yr olds.
