First off, wow. What a journey. But one thing kept bothering me throughout the entire series. The "expeliarmus" spell is used in every movie I think, and it's the one that knocks the wand out of a person's hand. My initial thought was why don't they put a little wristband on the wand like a Wii remote so they don't get their wands knocked out of their hands all the time? Seems like a really easy fix and would render the expeliarmus spell completely useless.

It always seemed like the victims of this spell were caught completely off guard every single time it happened but it happened really frequently. Kind of ruined an otherwise amazing experience for me.

I agree. I really, really liked the movie series but must admit as a former Dungeons and Dragons nerd I was kinda disappointed at the pretty limited range of spells shown consistently.

To be honest, I’ve seen all of them (never read them) and I’m still not sure I could explain the overarching plot.

I think Voldemort should’ve made a more ancient spirit instead of a guy who died like 20 years earlier.

A few unfortunate wizards tried this. The "away" force of the expelled wand was so significant that their arms were torn from their torsos.

Ive been rewatching them since they’re on hbo now, and the big question I’ve been pondering: “If all these people are god damn wizards and shite, why are they working menial jobs and stuff?”

Can’t they just use spells and stuff to get money, food, shelter, etc...?

Yeah man there are too many of those instances to count. For example, I watched the last two movies today and in one scene Harry has to jump in a frozen pond to recover an important sword. He does a spell to cut a hole in the ice and then disrobes and jumps in the freezing water. I was thinking why does he have a spell that can cut a hole in ice but not one that can just unfreeze the little pond and warm up the water to bathtub temperature?

JKR spoke (tangentially) to the first two issues in an interview in 2000

Q: It seems that the wizards and witches at Hogwarts are able to conjure up many things, such as food for the feasts, chairs and sleeping bags. . .if this is so, why does the wizarding world need money ? What are the limitations on the material objects you can conjure up ? It seems unnecessary that the Weasleys would be in such need of money...

A: Very good question (well done, Jan!!). There is legislation about what you can conjure and what you can't. Something that you conjure out of thin air will not last. This is a rule I set down for myself early on. I love these logical questions!

I believe book itself explicitly laws out the laws/inability to produce food out of thin air.

Actually gave it a quick Google:

Hermione: "Your mother can’t produce food out of thin air, no one can. Food is the first of the five Principal Exceptions to Gamp’s Law of Elemental Transfigura—"

Ron: "Oh, speak English, can’t you?"

Hermione: "It’s impossible to make good food out of nothing! You can Summon it if you know where it is, you can transform it, you can increase the quantity if you’ve already got some...

That must make grocery shopping very cheap and convenient. Grocery List: One single grape, one green bean, individual pea, one small piece of chicken, one tiny steak” .... food for the entire fam for a month

Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man a spell to increase the quantity of that fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Love the Harry Potter movies, but if you think too hard on some things it can all fall apart.

This was just Harry's favorite spell, iirc. Not all wizards used it as often as he did.

The movies are quite bad compared to the novels, which are phenomenal.

Even wizards have laws. Using magic to get money from muggles is stealing. Even if you got away with it, you would have to convert the muggle money into wizard money. That could raise red flags because why would a wizard have muggle money??

As for shelter, would you really want to live in something that was conjured out of thin air? Now, you can use magic to build the shelter, but you would need the raw materials to actually build the shelter.

Agreed. Although, I felt like they did a really good job through the first three movies. As the novels got bigger, they really should have split them into two movies to better follow the books.

This. The novels are amazing. My favorite was the Deathly Hallows, and the depth and detail into which they explained Albus Dumbledore's quest for them.

Yep. The books answer most if not all of the magic related questions. There are certainly still some continuity issues in the books and some questions that just aren't adequately explained, but most of the major points are explained appropriately.

Why couldn't they just use magic at the end to fix Hogwarts ... just like Dumbledore fixed that dopey progressor's house when it was all fricked up?
