Before he returns to the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in a new live-action Disney+ series, Ewan McGregor opened up about the harsh reception the Star Wars prequel movies received.

"[It] was hard they didn't get well received. That was quite difficult," McGregor said in an interview for The Hollywood Reporter's latest cover story. "They were universally not very much liked."

The actor starred in 1999's The Phantom Menace, 2002's Attack of the Clones, and 2005's Revenge of the Sith. He recalled how much CGI effects Star Wars creator and director George Lucas employed for those prequel films, including entire backdrops of bluescreens.

"George loves technology and loves pushing into that realm," he said. "He wanted more and more control over what we see in the background."

"After three or four months of that, it just gets really tedious — especially when the scenes are… I don't want to be rude, but it's not Shakespeare," he added. "There's not something to dig into in the dialogue that can satisfy you when there's no environment there. It was quite hard to do."

Obi-Wan Kenobi, the series, will feel "so much more real," he promises, because of StageCraft, which The Mandalorian showrunner Jon Favreau utilized for his Star Wars series.

"They project [the virtual backgrounds] onto this massive LED screen. So if you're in a desert, you're standing in the middle of a desert. If you're in the snow, you're surrounded by snow. And if you're in a cockpit of a starfighter, you're in space," McGregor said.

Given the timeline, a young Luke Skywalker seems like a sure thing for this show, as well. "That's very possible," McGregor teases. "I don't know."

"I'm really excited about it," the actor says of the show in general. "Maybe more so than the first ones, because I'm older — I just turned 50 — and I'm just in a much better place."

It was no fault of Ewan’s. He was the perfect choice to play young Obi-Wan.

He can take solace in the fact he was really the only thing worth watching in the prequels.

So, there's that...

Making of The Phantom Menace

This is a pretty good watch. A lot went into it.

Lee chewed scenery. And McDormond had a blast. Qui-Gon also good. Problem with the prequels was damn near every scene they weren’t part of.

The only problem with the prequels was that it was a rough draft of the final story that should've been told and the source of its troubles is the dialogue and how wooden it was, it needed a lot more work to make Anakin's fall to the dark side have more impact.

The lore, world building, characters and general plot was perfectly great and really set up the amazing Clone Wars series and the forthcoming bad batch series. The dialogue just needed a lot more work to really flesh out the characters and that's where the animated series came in.

With that said, this is Star Wars to me in a nutshell.

It’s true you love the movies you grew up with because I love the prequels, they’re not great but they’re at least entertaining and a fun piece of my childhood. Especially since that trash sequel trilogy, I def appreciate them more now than before.

Well it is incredibly difficult to please a Star Wars die-hard fan, I saw each of the prequels in theater

I wonder if actors can often realize while filming a movie how bad (or good) it's going to be?

With all the editing and all the scenes they aren't even present for, they can't have the full picture.

Watching the prequels again I realized the story was actually brilliant. It's just that the dialogue was god awful, which led to some terrible acting. Also any scene with Anakin as a child.

There were also such odd production choices - Jar Jar Binks and the battle droids being only comic relief - that it took away from the whole thing.

All in all, the prequels were orders of magnitude better than the utter trash they put out in the new trilogy. I still can't even bring myself to watch Episode 9.

The prequels were flawed but always some great moments (and then would revert back to really terrible and sometimes inconsequential dialogue). The sequels were entirely garbage.

The nuts and bolts framework of the story was there. It just needed better execution.

George Lucas needed screen writers who had the stones to tell him he was wrong and the dialogue needed to be reworked and fleshed out.

I went in with very low expectations and watched it as a popcorn flick of entertaining garbage. Nothing more than that.

The acting was bad across the board bc the actors were set for failure. Awful dialogue and nothing but a green screen.

From what Ive read that’s what his first wife did during the original trilogy.

I think he and Hayden are really excited at the chance to redeem themselves. Though I came to love obi wan purely because of Ewan and that saved the prequels for me. Ewan always will be obi wan. Always.

I would imagine they only have the vaguest of clues, especially for something like this. If you have a good moment of dialogue, you get a better sense of whether it was good or not.

Take the recent Justice League film(s). They don't seem like the same movie, and yet most of the scenes are the same as shot. One is fairly good, the other is forgettable.

Darth Maul is the coolest looking villain in Star Wars movie history imo. And the best fighter. Followed up by an old dude who could barely swing light saber in the next one. Nice George.
