No, it's an excuse to MARKET to latinos. Think "money."

IMO Encanto is strongest in its landing. One of the recent animated films I was most frustrated by was Finding Dory, which both literally and figuratively jumped the shark with Dory just finding her parents.

Encanto’s ending does not shy away from the issues causing the House Madrigal to crumble.

OK, got back from it due to a boring afternoon with the Saints not being on, and I typically respect your opinions MrTide, but this one just didn’t do it for me. I’m sorry, but this movie should not be mentioned in the same sentence as Coco. None of the songs come off as memorable to me for starters. Moana, all of those were earworms, and I don’t remember any of these songs in the immediate aftermath, and there sure as shite isn’t a song in the realm of “Remember Me”. I will remember none of these songs tomorrow.

I think this is the worst Disney Princess movie since Pocahontas. I mean it’s OK, like 2.5 out of 4 stars, but it’s not something that I’d want to show my kids. Anything cool you get with the house you get with Hogwarts. At least Raya was a great Disney Princess, but Mirabel is just boring. That may have been the point, but still doesn’t make an engaging main character.

Save for the animation (which is gorgeous), the rest of it is bland as shite. Each character comes in with a musical number and you basically don’t hear from them again. Coco is a fricking masterpiece where Miguel greatly changes as a character. Encanto is not and I don’t think there’s a great character within the movie.

I liked it much better than Coco which I found depressing and almost morbid. I know that’ll earn me some downvotes.

Coco is intentionally morbid given it takes place in the Realm of the Dead. Plus the villain is partially based on OJ although the writers wouldn’t say that until release for obvious reasons. I mean this movie is more feel good than Coco is, but that’s besides the point. Coco is a masterpiece because it is a cynical cautionary tale of being careful of selling your soul for fame and fortune above your family. Coco is like the fairytales of old in that manner, while Encanto is not.

People will be watching Coco 70 years from now like we do Pinocchio. I don’t think they’ll be watching this 70 years from now. Coco I think is the best animated film of the past five years, while Encanto isn’t even in the debate. Raya is clearly a better movie than Encanto.

That’s too bad. It is very much less plot-driven than Coco and yeah, Mirabel doesn’t change much. Many characters were sidelined. But the songs were catchy as hell to me, especially Luisa’s song and at that point I just hopped on board with the movie. To each their own. Can’t wait for all the Avatar stuff we’re about to get

Watched it last night with the wife and thought it was one of the better Disney films of late. Not better than Coco at all but I don’t agree with you shatting all over it. I’m surprised I liked it as much as I did because I usually don’t like the Disney films that sing a lot vs the ones that hardly sing at all.

I’d rank it above films like Luca, Onward, Soul, Finding Dory. But I wouldn’t put it in the category of Raya, Toy Story 4 or Coco. This was solidly in the middle for me. Luca, Onward, Soul…I’ll never watch again until I watch them with my kids. Coco, TS4, Raya and Encanto Id watch again even without them. Some of the songs were weak. Some of them were also really good and underrated.

I like Disney’s trend of tackling different cultures and it’s worked extremely well with Coco, Moana and Encanto but not as well with Luca. I hope we see more films like it but I do hope we’ll see them keep trying to develop wholly original content like Inside Out, The Incredibles and stuff like that too

Took my 3-year old to see it this weekend--his first movie. I thought it was great. Kid was mesmerized. It is a beautiful film. I loved the color pallet and art direction. The script was solid for a Disney film. It didn't overcook the characters or belabor the plot. I didn't even know Lin-Manuel Miranda worked on this film until I started hearing the songs. (Sometimes it pays to go into a film knowing next to nothing about it.) It has heart, and that Disney magic that seems lost on a lot of their later projects.

Hot take: I liked it better than Coco.

"We Don't Talk About Bruno" is the 1st Disney song to hit No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 since "A Whole New World"

Man, lots of Luca hate. I absolutely loved that one. Admittedly, my 1-2 year old loves Luca so that biases me a little bit, but IMO it's pretty great in its own right. It's really, really good.

And Onward was one that I was meh on until the end. With the love from and for his brother, I thought that was a really nice touch.

Soul is weak, and Finding Dory is way too overly unrealistic (even for a movie about talking sea life) and stupid.

I still have not seen Encanto yet, but I will at some point. Just wanted to drop in here and defend Luca a little.

ETA: Forgot to put my two cents in on Coco; it's top-tier Pixar. It's that great.

Finally got around to watching this one. It was ok. The story had potential but it kinda just seemed lazy how the problem was resolved in the end. They barely spent any time on resolving anything and then the movie was over. I honestly don't get the hype for this movie, outside of the songs being pretty catchy.

ETA: I know Coco is Pixar, but it was a similar story and theme that was much better executed. The payoff in Coco was incredible.

Its just the songs. My 8 year old can't tell you anything in regards to the actual story, but she can sing all of the songs.

when the exciting climax is the little girl with glasses and her grandmother hugging and crying next to a creek, you know you've been had for 2 hours.

My 3yr old can tell everything about the movie and sing the songs. It's basically on repeat at this point.

It's not the best story of the Disney movies but catchy and all the kids are enamored with it.

But like why? Over two months after its release? Something on tik tok trigger it?

I'm guessing it's because of it hitting Disney+ and being promoted there.

My 5 year old sings this song incessantly. I prefer Louisa's Pressure song.
