Dunkirk

I finally saw Dunkirk today; I'd been wanting to see it for awhile now. I have to say, I was a little underwhelmed by it.
The action seemed kind of slow. I just didn't feel the urgency of needing to get the BEF off of those beaches. The air combat scenes were pretty decent, though.

I love Nolan but I think he needs to chill out with the ambition and scale of every movie. His best movie is still a comic book movie.

He kind of tweener did what he was going for and it didn’t quite gel to me. It felt like he was going for “this is what war is really like, not these romanticized movies/shows” but put in some Hollywood esque plot lines. I couldn’t ever really get into it. I didn’t dislike it, but I wish he would have fully committed to option A.

Dunkirk was made to be seen in IMAX. Its why I never watched it again at home. I don't see how it could compare to that theater experience.

That’s a big part of it. The massive screen and loudness takes it to another level. Some may argue that that means it’s not a great movie, and maybe I’d agree. But it was pretty awesome in IMAX

quote:Yeah. The sound in IMAX is a major part of it. It's disorienting and really fricks with you in a way that makes the movie an experience. This is sort of like Gravity in that way. If you didn't see it in the movie theater, you missed your chance to really see the movie. It's not the same at home.

I thought it was easily one of the best movies of that year.

As other posters have said, it’s not nearly the same experience at home, especially on a typical LED panel TV.
With that said, I recently got the 4K disc and watched in our theater. Seeing it in native 4K on a 148 inch screen is a great experience. While I really wish they would have mastered the film in Atmos, the lossless 5.1 pack a punch. When people want to see how our setup looks and sounds, Dunkirk is one of the movies I show.

Nolan missed the mark with this movie. It isn't nearly as good as some would want you to think.

I think it'd drag a little at home but it was very intense in theaters.

Same here. I picked it up on DVD a month or so ago. Quit watching about 1 hour into it. Since then, I've finished watching it on HBO but very underwhelming and meh.

Interstellar, did you forget that one?

The Prestige is also a fantastic movie.

I watched it a few months ago. Didn't care for it at all. It was boring and had no story.

It was a visual experience for me.
That movie looked amazing.

He should have CGI'd a lot more soldiers on the beach.

The storyline w/ Styles drags a bit and sometimes seems like an odd way to relay that part of the event. I appreciate the idea of his character (young, uninterested in the war, self-interested), but it's still a weak point IMO.
Last 20 minutes is excellent.

And see, I thought the exact opposite. The IMAX I saw it at (which is more of an "IMAX" than the actual real thing) was so overly loud that it was legit painful at times and VERY distracting. Instead of enhancing the movie experience, it took us right out of it and was an annoyance.
I enjoyed Dunkirk, but it is one of Nolan's weakest efforts IMO (and that's not a slight to it, because it is a good movie, just his others are great).
I also didn't really like the different timelines thing. I got what he was going for, but it didn't blend overly well for me, and I wasn't a fan of it.
