Some people seem to point to that as foreshadowing that she dropped it on purpose, but that's a total misreading of that scene. She is saying that it is alright to lose and your sibling to win. She is not saying that it is alright to lose on purpose.

Anybody who thinks Dottie dropped the ball on purpose must not have watched the whole movie and I would question their intelligence. It just makes no sense for the character.

So the director of the movie is wrong?

quote:

Penny Marshall has discussed it a few times. On one special edition commentary she said Dottie did it on purpose, Penny took a lot of shite for that. So I think her official position now is that it is up to the viewer to decide what happened. Dottie doing it on purpose was what she said initially though, so take that for what it's worth when you watch it.

Dam Guide, last time we did this.

She caved to terrible pressure from people who think the movie is about Kit for some reason. Heroes make choices. Dottie is the hero. Her choice.

And if you look up Dottie dropped it on purpose, TD is like the 5th or 6th link

Lol, we need to get TD to be the number one authority of Dottie dropping the ball.

Actually saw a little girl dressed like a Rockford Peach at the Chattanooga Zoo last night for Boo at the Zoo, kudos to that family for having a kid with taste.

I don't get it, the whole movie is about Dottie's pride getting in the way of the love of her sister, her family, etc. It's crazy to think that the end of the movie is "Ok, I'm not the best anymore, I guess my husband and kids will suffice, won't be as cool as winning though," rather than "I choose them over being the best."

No shite. Because then ol' Penny is a shitty director and storyteller.

You at least film a moment in the final 5 minutes that lends credence to the on purpose drop.

Like when Dottie walks up to her pitcher and says basically this is how you strike this motherfricker out...but lets say then walking back she looks at Kit and her facial expression changes...or she flashes back to childhood.

fricking something but cold blooded killer Dottie sitting behind home plate hating Kit's guts.

Oh but then I drop the ball on purpose because I grew a conscious while Kit was rounding the bases, decided to screw over my teammates and coach in those seconds and make myself look like the bum and goat of the game. (NOT GOAT, but goat) - by dropping a tag.

Yeah, that sounds like Dottie...

And frankly Marshall is an idiot...it's a better ending if she DOESN"T drop it on purpose. Kit finally overcame the shadow of her domineering big sister. Kit won it on merit...it wasn't given to her.

But ultra-liberal Penny Marshall would prefer this victory was given to the helpless Kit who needs help from Big Sis to make people winners and happy in life. That's a shitty ending. Kit's happiness and pride then is fake. It's based on charity.

There is no way in hell a sister smiles at Kit at the end...an unexpected smile; a smile that just appears out of disappointment, a surprised smile - if she dropped the ball on purpose.

Dottie would have just walked off the field and said, meh, I gave it to that crybaby.

Dropping the ball on purpose is a fradulent ending. So yeah, it was a dick move by the Director if you believe she dropped on purposeThe

Let’s not forget she left BEFORE the title series starts because her husband is back. Her husband is a nice sweet man, the type that would seem supportive of her playing to begin with not some domineering a-hole demanding she get back in the kitchen where she belongs.
Then she come backs just in time for the last game, the manager is super excited and changes his lineup. So if she dropped it purpose she is one of the most selfish characters ever.

I agree the ending sucks if Dottie dropped it on purpose. Dottie tells the pitcher that Kit can't hit high fastballs, then looks like she just shitt her skirt when Kit actually hits the last high fastball on an 0-2 count, then when Kit lays her arse out she decides to drop the ball? You end the movie with Dottie being a condescending bitch and Kit being so pathetic that she needed big sis to throw the game for her to win something. You spend 2 hours showing how important these women are and how important this game is, you even pulled Jimmy Dugan out of alcoholism with the love of the game, then you shitt all over it by making it Dottie's own personal little playtoy of sympathy.

If Dottie dropped the balm on purpose, she made the decision to to do in the split second she realized Kit wasn’t stopping and called for the ball. There’s no way she starts calling for the ball just so she could drop it. That’s not logical.
