She pretty much fricked over her whole team to make her insecure, twat sister feel better.
Also we’re in agreement Bettie spaghetti was the hottest in the movie right?
Cool

she made the whole league relevant and sustainable but never wanted to play in the first place. The purpose of the league was not so the players could win. The purpose was to make money. She made the owners and the players money and everyone a great experience. One dick move is irrelevant.

How does throwing a game make the league more popular?

Dottie was a dick.
The entire theory of her dropping the ball on purpose was her smile at the end when she sees Kit happy...that's just sister pride.
You don't tell your pitcher how to strike out your sister, then look in amazement when Kit hits the ball and then look like you are going to block the plate with all your might...if you're only going to decide in that last split-second before hitting the ground to drop the ball...because that split-second gave you feelings?
If Dottie drops on purpose, then the entire set-up to the collision at home plate is a total lie by Penny Marshall as director. Because she tells the audience Dottie doesn't want her sister to win. Dottie was an alpha-male.
Dropping the ball on purpose is a fradulent ending. So yeah, it was a dick move by the Director if you believe she dropped on purpose...because there's no basis for it in the entire movie and especially the final 5 minutes of the movie.

Hard to believe the combination of Rob Reiner and Penny Marshall equaled this

And FTR I never thought she dropped the ball on purpose

Marshall's daughter. Adopted by Reiner.

What matters more, a bunch of people she just met, or her sister, who needed a win?

It's been too long.

Can you explain why she told the pitcher exactly how to strike her out if she just wanted little sis to win?

I would argue that if she was going to play another season it would have been a great move for the league to create interest and showcase resiliency and blah blah blah beat writer wet dream
however since she abandoned the league as the best player *twice and her sister was unmarketable due to (butterface) and Ryan Leaf outbursts of emotional immaturity
she basically sentenced the league to die so she wouldn't miss it, took away the greatest accomplishment most of her teammates would ever know, and then ran back home to get porked on a farm

The decision to drop it on purpose was made as Kit rounded 3rd.

Anybody who thinks Dottie dropped the ball on purpose must not have watched the whole movie and I would question their intelligence. It just makes no sense for the character.

I watched this movie from start to finish again the last time this was brought up. I just don't get the feeling she dropped it on purpose.
Why would she come back to play in that game, only to screw over her teammates? She never once let her sister win anything. When she came back, she was trying to do everything possible for her team to win..
Has Penny Marshall ever commented on this? I can't ever find anything. I guess they just leave it open to interpretation.
The argument could be made that even though Dottie was the ultimate competitor, she did originally quit on her team. Don't blame her with her husband returning though.

Wasn’t her telling the older brother to “go easy on him” and the younger “kill him” foreshadowing? She didn’t want the win to be handed to her sister but since she gave it her all she was willing to concede it.
