I have my eye on something that to me is more troubling: I refer to the recent plummeting share of movie dollars that people spend on comedies, because Hollywood isn’t making them, or because America is in a bad mood, or both

The situation is dire.

In December, I saw something that chilled me to my funny bone: When Kevin Hart’s Night School opened at No. 1 at the box office, it was the first comedy to do so in more than two years.

We’re seeing fewer comedies, and laughing less at the comedies we do see. To get a sense of this decline, let’s run things back 20 years to 1998 for a full-year comparison. You’ll find a diverse array of comedies in the top 15:

Been saying this for like 5 years now on this board.

You get lucky to get 1 good pure comedy a year. It’s sad.

Well even a few years ago people of all races, creeds, classes would laugh at a lot of shite poking fun of themselves and each other.

They still likely do that in large numbers but you have very vocal groups bitching and performing the necessary mental gymnastics to find offense with most things that are funny these days.

Cyclical. Before Cosby, the sitcom was “dead”. Then sitcoms took over and the one hour drama was “dead”. Comedies will lay low and make a resurgence. They won’t go the way of the western.

They can’t really be offensive anymore because everyone gets their panties in a wad.

There aren't any good comedies being made anymore. Sandler and Farrell are way past their prime. Carrell, Rogan, and Hill are all mostly doing dramas now. The women comedians aren't funny. Not a lot of young talent coming up either.

I think they will make a comeback. Superheroes and Disney remakes seem to be the majority of stuff coming out in
theaters . (Im guilty, I consume alot of this) The last comedy film I saw in theaters was probably 22 Jump street. Anything else was probably something I decided to watch while scrolling on Netflix.

For example.. I was a freshman in College when Superbad came out and it was and is one of the funniest moves I’ve ever seen .

The amount of gay slurs and other things in that movie.. highly doubt it would get made at all today.

Probably because the PC culture in Hollywood doesn’t allow things that are funny anymore.

This is 100% true, plus Phillips and Apatow are doing other crap now.

Game Night and Tag did well last year without huge comedy stars, and Super Troopers 2 did well compared to its budget/promotion, but there werent any truly great comedies.

We need that next great white comedy star. Im not being racist, but there is probably over half the country that hates Hart, Haddish, and Tyler Perry, and their comedy films are rampant now.

This is just not true. There’s a lot crazier shite out there now than then.

Also I don’t remember any gay slurs in that movie at all

Guess I forgot about Faggelle. Pretty sure that movie could’ve survived without that

The rest of the pure comedies in 2019

Good Boys-Kids
Three sixth grade boys ditch school and embark on an epic journey while carrying accidentally stolen drugs, being hunted by teenage girls, and trying to make their way home in time for a long-awaited party.

Jojo Rabbit- Taika Waititi
A young boy in Hitler's army finds out his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their home.

Bad Trip-Tiffany Haddish
Two friends embark on a cross-country road trip where they prank people using hidden cameras.

Last Christmas-Paul Feig, Emilia Clarke
Kate is a young woman subscribed to bad decisions. His last date? That of having accepted to work as Santa's elf for a department store. However, she meets Tom there. His life takes a new turn. For Kate, it seems too good to be true.

Superintelligence-Melissa McCarthy
Carol Peters' life is turned upside down when she is selected for observation by the world's first superintelligence - a form of artificial intelligence that may or may not take over the world.

Game Night and Tag

Really enjoyed both of these. Actually liked Tag a little more I think. Thought the cast was well put together and they complimented each other well.

It’s funny that this thread was made because my wife made a comment about us not watching as many comedies when we watched tag on hbo go a few weeks ago.

Tag was funnier while game night was directed and produced better

Some of the film making they did in game night makes me excited for what that director will do next

Usually after war/dark times, American society had periods of unbridled gaiety:

WW1, then Roaring 20's/Jazz
Great Depression, then great classic Hollywood comedies/Big Band era
W2 & Korean War, the RnR, sex & drug revolution
Vietnam, then Disco era
etc, etc..

Liberal Hollywood views the Trump era as a massively depressive one. They'll start mass-producing comedies and electronic dance music 3.0 after 2024 if they don't all commit suicide first.

That’s a good way to put it. I wanted to laugh when I turned on both and I think Tag did the better job. Game night kinda had me wondering what was next with some good laughs mixed in.

Fun fact that I keep forgetting: the screen writer and director of Game night is the kid from Freaks and Geeks/Bones/Waiting
