Does Pacino Ruin Heat?

I’m watching it again for the first time and his over acting is absurd. It passes in some scenes. Is making him an aggressive cop really worth all the stupid lines?
“You can get killed walkin ya doggy!”

It's been a while since I saw it. I remember thinking the pacing was not very consistent.

The whole movie is so choppy. The bank shoot out
scene saves the entire movie. The Kilmer side story is so stupid, especially when dinero strong arms her in the motel

Heat is exactly where it should be. No awards, but it’s got some fun scenes. Pacino didn’t ruin anything

When I watched the movie, I remember thinking maybe if Deniro and Pacino changed roles, it would be a better movie. I'm not sure if I would still feel that way. I haven't seen the movie in a decade at least.

Pacino played his character as if he was a coke head. So his mannerisms are bananas.

frick yeah he ruined it. He also ruined scent of a woman.

When did Pacino become such a hack? Scent of a Woman was unwatchable. He looks like a clown in Heat. Even in Donnie Brasco he's over the top. Did Scarface ruin him?

What? He was pretty subdued in Donnie Brasco compared to the others.

Just not a fan myself. Godfather role I liked

70s Pacino and 90s Pacino might as well be two different people.
That said, I don't think he ruined Heat at all. It's rooted in pulp and noir. His louder scenes fit. He saved The Insider (1999), which would have been much too dry to work without him. He's also great in Glengarry Glenn Ross and Carlito's Way. In between those he was awful in Dick Tracy, Scent of a Woman, Donnie brasco, and more.
He definitely developed a shtick. Some filmmakers utilized it better than others. I haven't seen any of his recent work, some of which has been decently reviewed.

Brasco is one of my favorite films. He plays an old washed-up Mob earner so well...still looking to get promoted...still looking to carve out a niche for himself. It's one of his best roles; the sadness and resignation in his character.
If anything Depp is over-the-top with the FBI, his wife, etc.
No, Pacino doesn't bring down Brasco, he makes the movie. Depp is the lead and the title name but Pacino is the main character...it's really his story told through Depp.
Spoilers:
The final scene where he gets "sent for" and is waiting in his suit...and is resigned to his fate. Now that's acting.
The movie is basically "Death of a Salesman" mafia style and Brasco is his son...and Pacino's dreams were lost years ago and he passes them onto Donnie.
One of the underrated moments in that movie is when the big Mafia boss steps out of the Limo with his big Cigar and Pacino angles his way to try and get seen by the big Boss...despite 26 years in the Mafia, he's still a schlep. He has nothing to show for his lifestyle so he latches onto Donnie...as his mentor...while everyone else tells Donnie, "you think he's helping you but he's hurting you." Pacino has to brag that he's known in all the burroughs because he knows deep down he's almost a nobody in his own crew...just another hump.
The reason people actually liked this movie (apart from other 90' era movies by Pacino) was that it was understated and back to pure acting.

I don't think he outright ruins it but he's still pretty awful in it imo

Agree with all of that.
Also interesting to do some online reading about the real Lefty, Benjamin Ruggiero:
Seems like Pacino got the character about right, though I think it mixed in some elements from the real Sonny Black's story.

You nailed it. I will never understand the criticism of his performance in Brasco. He gave a pathetic nobility to it, made the character entirely sympathetic, and didn’t slip into archetypal cliche. I think it rivals some of his more celebrated performances.

It's a valid question.
But he gave excellent performances in Godfather, Glengarry, and Donnie Brasco.

Yeah he became lazy and just overacts in everything he does, but it kind of works in Heat, actually. IMO
And why would OP quote the “can get killed walking your doggy” line?? That’s actually a great line and delivery
If anything the GIMMIE ALL YA GOT and the GREAT arse nonsense were the best examples of his schtick ruining a scene

Let me guess. He said something that you conservatives didn't agree with? I do find it funny that you're criticizing Pacino in Heat, Scent of a Woman, and Donnie Brasco while holding out Scarface as if it was his best. Scarface is probably his most over the top, ridiculous performance.

I thought he was fine in Carlito's Way.

He was fine in donnie brasco, i thought.
You know where he did some of his best work post scarface? The Dick Tracey movie. I think he played "Lips"?
