Gemini was the engineering bridge from putting men in space to putting men on the Moon. It has no legs except as the transition from single person, "Spam in a can" Mercury missions to the complex, long duration Apollo lunar missions.
There is a lot of drama that can be explored with it though. For instance...you have the fact that Shepard was the original commander of Gemini III before he got grounded due to his ear problem. You can focus on his new job as assistant director of flight crew operations working under his pal (and soon to be best friend) Deke Slayton. You also have the budding rivalry between the Original Seven and the New Nine brought in to help crew the Gemini missions. You can focus on Neil Armstrong and the qualities Slayton saw in him that would eventually lead him to get the nod to command the first moon landing. There are also the tragic deaths of Charles Bassett and Elliot See to explore, the near death experiences of Wally Schirra and Tom Stafford on the launch pad of Gemini VI, the near death experience of Gene Cernan during his space walk on Gemini IX. You also have the historic first U.S. space walk with Ed White on Gemini IV as well as the harrowing mission of Dave Scott and Neil Armstrong aboard Gemini VIII. Plus you have the ingenuity Buzz Aldrin displayed in coming up with a way to work successfully in the vacuum of space aboard Gemini XII. There's a lot of territory an eight episode season two can cover with the Gemini program.

I guess it just feels more soap opera than History. Through 2 episodes all we know is that Alan Shepard enjoyed fast cars, fast women and drinking. John Glenn was a Boy Scout. The rest are just background characters. Shallow. So far the show has been shallow.
I watched the first two episodes yesterday, and what I got out of it was they were basically making The Right Stuff as Mad Men. They even have Aaron Staton (Ken Cosgrove of Mad Men) as Wally Schirra, and Patrick Fischler (Jimmy Barrett on Mad Men) as Bob Gilruth.
And they are making Alan Shepard as Don Draper 2, with his drinking, smoking, womanizing, and aloof/maverick/self-centered attitude. Problem is, while I can believe this guy as a Don Draper clone:
I'm not buying him as this dorky guy in real life:
Yeah I'm aware that Alan Shepard in real life WAS a philanderer, but you know he probably got nothing better than OT 5's looking like that.

Well Scott Glenn played him in the original so it's not like they were going for documentary style accuracy either,

I think you're underestimating the amount of attractive women who fell over these guys. When I was stationed in Colorado, I had a co-worker whose grandmother was one of those women who slept around with the Mercury astronauts. She showed me a picture of her grandmother from that particular time in her life and she was an O-T 7 at the very least. And yes, she did make it with Shepard. A Life Magazine reporter caught them in the aftermath of the deed and the dude never printed a word about it.

I'd love for this to happen. I don't know as much of the Gemini story as I do Mercury and Apollo

Look, I'm sure there's all kinds of problems or valid criticisms.
But as pointed out above, this history needs to be taught and it's a good thing this series is out. Kids, teens, college kids and adults who grew up after the Challenger and all aren't going to look up The Right Stuff.
So it's great that Disney is shoving this in people's faces that otherwise would never think to look into the infancy of our space program and the awesome accomplishments we as a nation have achieved.

You do realize that most rock stars are butt assed ugly and they all pull 10s.
These guys were bigger than rock stars, they pretty much got any arse they wanted. Doesn't matter what he looked like.

You do know there are women, even very attractive women, who will absolutely chase a guy just to say they were with them right? Especially military guys.
