Yeah, I'm not looking at this thread again until after I watch it. But

32 minutes only...

That's really crazy.

I mean, sure, I'm paying less for this than I do for Prime.

But the Mandalorian is the only new offering Disney+ has for a big demographic (males between 12 and retirement ), and combined with the MCU and SW movie catalog, was what prompted me to subscribe. I know there are more shows coming, but you'd think they would go a full hr with the one they have.

Upgrading his armor one piece at a time too.

I definitely see it.

Mando’s ship looks like the Winnebago on space balls.

I would lay down my life to protect baby Yoda.

IMO, Mando’s helmet seems to be lacking in features. He goes into that cave and turns on a flashlight, shouldn’t his helmet have infrared or night vision. Also he uses that telescope a lot, you would think he’s got zoom vision in that helmet too. Just feel his helmet should be more tricked out and serve a greater purpose than looking cool. I guess it’s bare bones and just for protection though.

I also agree this feels like an RPG. Main quest is the bounty, go to a planet and fulfill a bunch of side quests on the way. 100% the planet then move on to the next main quest objective.

Finally got around to watching it. It’s still really good but I feel like it needs to be longer.

Also apparently critics have seen episodes 2 and 3 and are loving both of them, particularly 3.

Agreed. Very good episode and I'm surprised they had the child use the force but glad they did. I'd like HBO length episodes but supposedly the next episode is roughly 30 minutes as well. I'm sure theyll respond to the feedback from the audience.

Eta: Can we talk about the soundtrack and Mandalorian theme for this? What a job setting the tone.

A show that feels like you're in the star wars universe without the classic star wars music is great.

Is this the first star wars show/series ever without the usual star wars music?

All I wanna know is why didn't they take the creative energy into coming up with a storyline for this show, and invest that same energy into the Episodes 7-9?

Because watching this show, they really did hit the Star Wars "mark". It is far better than anything I've seen from Episodes 1-3 and 7-8.

Because Disney wanted a quick buck on the franchise and Kathleen Kennedy saw the moment as an opportunity to make proclamations about the "glory" of the intersectionality religion.

Star Wars has several layers.

Lucas chose to focus Ep 1-3 on the Jedi/Republic to Empire layer, where everything was pretty clean and civilized, and people lived in relative luxury.

But there was the grimy layer too, where Luke and Han came from. The cantina scene, the Lars homestead, etc. Things weren't ordered on Amazon, they were pulled from the local Salvation Army and repurposed. And... life was cheap.
Firefly tapped into that layer, even though it wasn't SW in the strict sense. And did it far better than Solo (movie), just my opinion.

Looks like The Mandalorian "gets" that layer conceptually correct. Way better than Solo, thus far on a par with Firefly. And since it's actually within SW, that's a great thing.

Regarding the actual episode, 2 observations:

1st, the story so far. I like it, it's drawing me in. I like the ugly little cowboy mechanic dude. Got some frontier nobility to him.
Yoda baby- a yoda clone perhaps? My son, who's into the SW lore, says the species are Force-sensitive, but I thought that was a bit much considering what he did.

2nd- the tone.
LOVE it, and it's doing a great job of dispelling my fear that Disney would make this stuff kid-friendly. Hell, even the current movies are presented with a kiddy point of view, silly remarks defusing some of the violence.
This doesn't take that route. To note- we get to see him smoke a few Jawas, in a way you don't expect from Disney. Even get a sniper view on some of the kill shots.
And then with the woolly mammoth rhino critter- yoda-baby saves the day, you could easily go the route of him taming and soothing the beast. Nope, he goes up and sticks a knife in it's neck, and twists it.
That wasn't PETA friendly

I noticed on the first episode when he is back at the Mandolorian base/compound all the others had the antenna on the side. I remember Boba having the antenna too.

You're kidding, right?

Han Solo from the cantina, and Mal Reynolds, they are the same character.
Firefly put it in a different universe, but besides aliens and the Force, it's the same setting and same worldview.

Hope the Marvel shows aren’t 30 minutes each considering they are only doing about 6 episodes of those

Scoob, I'll be a FireFly fanboy until the day I die, but you are kidding, right? No, Firefly is not in the same league or same degree of fantasy as SW. It's not.

Guess we're going to have to agree to disagree. And I'm pretty sure you're missing my whole point.

I'm a SW fan from back when I saw the original movie released in the theaters. From that point, up until ESB was released, there was a lot of SW stuff that came out, that ended up being deleted by what Lucas did.

Among that was a bunch of Han Solo stuff; didn't care about the Force, or rebellions, or politics etc. Solo was a cocky gunslinger and great pilot, who made most of his living doing shady things. And looking at, say, the cantina, and Tatooine in general, the Galaxy wasn't a clean, shiny place to live, where you got all your goods from Amazon and the standard of living was great.

Lucas minimized that going forward, choosing to focus on chrome Naboo ships etc, and mostly by honing in tightly to the Jedi stuff, to the neglect of - the normal man. Something for our hero (Luke, and now Rey) to rise out of.
Fine, but there's a lot of non-Jedi in that universe too.

I mention Firefly, because it's the best effort to date that attempts to show SF from that angle. Normal, cowboy-style action, without super powers or limited to a dystopian Earth, without caring about politics.

I think The Mandalorian gets that theme, and I expect it to be even better. I hope it is, because as you say, the potential is far greater in SW than in the Firefly universe.

My question is the Jawas, I never realized they were on other planets other than Tatooine.

Would of liked a back story on the lore of Mandalorians/Yoda creature. Like a prelude episode, where it had a spoiler tag, but would give you info on the peeps

Wish episodes were just another 10-15 minutes longer, but it's refreshing to watch it, compared to the new star wars flicks, which had agendas and tried to annoy the fan base.

This feels like it's trying to get you back to the old star wars.

Bounty Droid was a badass.

Where are the Hutts, Bounty hunters, bounties to collect and we get Carl Weathers. Love Carl, but this is Hutt territory.

Last thing, is this after all of the star wars movies? Or after the Return of the Jedi, but before new movies?
