Disney Eyeing Tom Hanks To Play Geppetto In Robert Zemeckis ‘Pinocchio’

EXCLUSIVE: After earning an Oscar nomination for playing Mister Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Tom Hanks is zeroing in on another children’s favorite. We are hearing that he is in early negotiations to play Geppetto in Disney and Robert Zemeckis’ live-action retelling of Pinocchio.
Although insiders say negotiations are very early, we hear that after reading the script, Hanks has reached out to Zemeckis to let him know he wants to do the film. Disney has always longed for Hanks to play the woodcarver, having approached him years ago when Paul King was attached to direct. That deal was never made, but given Hanks and Zemeckis’ long-standing relationship going back to when they both won Oscars for their work on Forrest Gump, this seems more likely to move forward.

Making his very own boy?
Yeah, that'll put to rest all those conspiracy theories.

Hanks is like a slap hitter to me these days
I still recognize the skill and the ability, but just it hasn’t been exciting to watch in a long time

They can't wait for the memes from this movie.

We're gonna have competing Pinocchio movies now. Guillermo del Toro is working on one too.

Better make sure they don’t put a bootyhole on Pinocchio.

Disney is going to frick this one up.
I like Hanks in a lot of his roles, but usually, I still see “Tom Hanks playing the character,” and not just the character.
Now that he’s getting older, and not the cute, boyish looking man-child like in Big or Forest Gump, he really looks like “Tom Hanks, playing an old guy, playing the character in the movie.“
It’s not a problem in some movies, because, like I said, I like Tom Hanks. In Sully, I thought, “Tom Hanks sure is serious in this movie, but damn, he sure can fly a plane! It’s a damn shame the way they’re treating him!”
In A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, I thought, “Oh look how nice Tom Hanks is being for doing a movie about Mr. Rogers.” It was like having Fred Rogers’ audiobook autobiography read to you by Tom Hanks.
However, with an existing story like Pinocchio that we are all familiar with, it’s going to be like, “Hey Tom Hanks, would you get off the set? Quit joking around. We need an actual old Italian puppet maker to be Geppetto.”

So his acting success has now become his biggest weakness? I do understand what you're saying getting at though. No one is going to look up and go HEY LOOK IT'S GEPPETTO! Maybe the make up department and whatever level of CGI they inevitably use will help separate the visual of Hanks from Geppetto.

Feels like he probably has one more Oscar-type performance left in him. But you're right, he hasn't exactly been the most exciting person to watch over the past say...decade. Just a dependable, safe actor.
He is starring in the upcoming Paul Greengrass western movie, News of the World.

His choices for the past 10 years are all like he went to his agent and was like “out of all of the choices I have, which one would everyone’s grandmother pick to watch when she takes the grandkids to AMC at 1:00 PM on a Tuesday”

Keep in mind that I’m saying this as a fan of Tom Hanks.
Tom is a movie star. He’s a decent actor, BUT actually, he’s more of a likable movie star. That’s not an insult. He’s in rare company. To me, he’s in the category of people like Jimmy Stewart or Carey Grant or maybe Brad Pitt.
There are other great actors who are chameleons. They change with each role they take (with-in a certain range) and really let the character stand out, not the movie star.
Could be worse, could be Liam Neeson or Nic Cage
Could be better though - I could see Ian McKellen, Anthony Hopkins, or Christopher Plummer doing it better
Morgan Freeman would be a safe bet too if they wanted to include "color" in the cast

Love the analogy.
Was watching a replay of Game 7 of the 1996 NLCS. Ozzie Smith was not a starter anymore and the game was a blowout. Ozzie got an at bat as a pinch hitter in the 8th inning or something. This was his final major league appearance. He swung at the first pitch and popped up in foul territory for the out, or something along those lines.
They didn’t even let him play defense in the 9th

I think Freeman would crush this role.

Not any commentary on Tom Hanks, per se, but in light of what I've heard, doesn't this sound exactly like Hollywood? To go out there and make a movie which flies directly in the face of any good sense, and almost taunting certain folks?

Hanks is just going to start getting all the old man roles, huh?
