Die Hard with a Vengeance questions

One of my favorite movies as a kid but I watched it for the first time in about 10 years yesterday and had some questions. What is the point of Simon getting Zeus to pal up with McClane and help him? I feel like they left out some kind of connection between Simon and Zeus that would explain why he put the bomb in the school where Zeus' nephews go and why Simon keeps telling people not to kill him. They could have thrown in a line about Zeus being related to the black cop in the first one or something to explain why Simon insists on Zeus being involved in the plan.
Also, we're led to believe that McClane would have been killed in Harlem while wearing the "I hate n*****s" sign if Zeus hadn't helped him. But then all of Simon's work with setting up all the distractions would have been pointless. Was Simon planning on Zeus stepping in? How did he know that would happen?
Or was it all supposed to be a coincidence?

No, he didn’t plan on Zeus helping McClean out. Simon directly says that.

That's what I was wondering about. I guess there were just a lot of coincidences then? Like the bomb at the nephews' school and making McClane wear the sign right across the street from Zeus' store. I'm probably overthinking it.

Even calls him the Good Samaritan at first.
And Mclane is a cop and had a gun, getting hit in the head with the bottle is what mucked it up and caused Zeus to step in.
I would assume Simon would think mclane would pull his gun and badge at some point.

I don’t think he really cared if McClane iced or died. If he died, he would continue playing Simon Says and just come up with some bullshite reason. He would just go straight to the threat though. Everything else with McClean was icing on the top

It was a coincidence that it was the same school as Zeus' nephews.
I think that the distractions were all in place to happen for the bank heist. Simon was just stringing along Mclane into it all to try to kill two birds with one stone. I don't think he needed Mclane to survive to continue on with his plan. Maybe he didn't expect Mclane to get killed at that first challenge in Harlem. Maybe just to get roughed up, so he had different ideas to throw at him if he made it past that. Then he improvised when Zeus inserted himself.

You're right, that's why the scary German guy with the sunglasses was pissed off at Simon. I think you summed it up well.

Fill up the 3 gallon jug. Empty it into the 5 gallon jug. Fill up the 3 gallon jug. Top off the 5 gallon jug, leaving 1 gallon in the 3 gallon jug. Empty the 5 gallon jug. Pour the 1 gallon from the 3 gallon jug into the 5 gallon jug. Fill up the 3 gallon jug and empty it into the 5 gallon jug. That gives you exactly 4 gallons.

Simon just needed the subway to blow up and for the cops to scatter away from Wall Street. McClane wasn't really needed for any of that and all of the "games" could have killed McClane.
Harlem guys could have beat, shot or stabbed McClane to death.
Subway bomb would have killed McClane and Zeus if McClane didn't throw a changeup and actually get on the subway to find the bomb.
Park bomb would have killed them, if they didn't defuse it.
Yankee stadium sniper would have killed McClane if McClane didn't send Zeus, instead.

The bomb being at the school was coincidence because it was the Chester A. Arthur school (i.e. named after the 21st President).
Zeus got involved first because he didn't want some white guy to get killed in Harlem which would bring more cops there.
Then, because he was pissed off, he mouthed off to Simon and told him to "stick his well-laid plan up his well-laid arse."
Simon's hubris is what helped foil his plan.

It was just a coincidence. I never asked him to tag along and I should have had him killed when he delivered the suitcase bomb.

He picked the school after Zeus got involved.
To "Get his attention."

Or...
You can fill up the 5-gallon jug, then pour from it to fill up the 3-gallon jug. This leaves you with the two gallons in the 5-gallon jug. Then you empty the 3-gallon jug and pour the remaining two gallons from the 5-gallon jug into it. Once again fill the 5-gallon jug, then pour off one gallon into the 3-gallon jug to finish filling it, leaving you with four gallons in the 5-gallon jug.

what I never understand with this is how did they know there was 1 gallon the 3 gallon jug, or in the 5 gallon jug? are there lines on the side the show where the jug level is 1 gallon, 2 gallons ?

Dude, there are literally two separate ways on how you can get to four gallons posted in this thread. One of which is the post to which you replied.
That doesn't include the technical bits on that problem, though (i.e. how precise the scale would be/how much spillage during transfer is too much), which could possibly be a separate topic than the actual math problem of how to get to four gallons.
