You must not remember much about the movie.

I remember the movie just fine. Maria and her friends were happy to get out of Puerto Rico. It was the Sharks that gave them grief. What I meant is that I hope they stuck with the plot and not try to "modernize" anything.

West Side Story is itself a remake of Romeo and Juliet
Yeah but we're talking about a remake of the Musical West Side Story...
Not the remake of a basic plot line that loosely inspired the plot in West Side Story.
West Side Story is the music and lyrics and choreography.
What they're doing now is purely a remake of West Side Story which stands alone and far apart from Romeo and Juliet.

Did you know that every living director in the world is filming a prequel/sequel/reboot/spinoff/live-action-remake of _____ [Enter any movie in history]?

Who's playing Natalie Wood?
Because she damn well better be Natalie Wood.
I mean, where's the audience? Why am I watching this? There's a perfectly good adaption from the stage with iconic actors that we already love.
Why remake it if making it better is a false propisition? People like Coke, we didn't need New Coke. Spielberg would have to make the movie 10X better and it still would fail with people who have seen it. It would only appeal to people who haven't seen the original.
Such a dumb project, he could be doing other things you would hope.
Not really interested also in watching Streetcar Named Desire starring Jonah Hill...because Brando is so passe for this new generation...gotta update everything for people who can't watch "old movies" - like 50's and 60's - yuck.
I hate this project because it's blatant pandering to a generation that is just all about who's the youngest new Twilight-ey Hunger Games thing and put them in a musical because Hansel, so hot right now and Musicals have definitely had a resurgence.
If the original was so bad, why didn't they remake it before now.
Back to the question, the only audience is kids and teenagers now...the only audience Hollywood cares about now.
This is simply, kids won't watch the classic, lets make a High School musical and call it West Side Story.

So they should only remake movies that were bad originally?
I get that the glut of remakes has been ridiculous for a long time now, but that argument is kinda dumb.

Meh,90% of the cast was obviously gay and I'm assuming it'll be close to the same in the remake (not that there's anything wrong with that)

PR bitches bitched about this, so in the film the guys were added to insult America for "equal time".
Curiously enough, adding the guys would inspire Jerome Robbins to create one of the greatest sequences in movie history.

Natalie Wood was beautiful, but she had no business being in that movie. She couldn’t sing, so she was dubbed, and she couldn’t dance, so most of Maria’s dance sequences from the play were cut. She was also heavily made up to appear Puerto Rican, which would be a huge no no today. Rachel Zegler, who is playing Maria in the remake, is of Colombian descent and she can sing.
